Wow, it looks as if the famous airport beach on Saint Martin has been destroyed. :(

The devastation is terrible. Communication has been hindered as well, but reports state that up to 95% of buildings were severly damaged or destroyed on st Martin island. Most reports are from the french owned part of the island, but i reckon it'd be similar on the dutch part.

Dutch navy vessels have been dispatched to the region, with a mission to restore runways so rescue can be flown in. At the moment it seems impossible to land even small planes there, but construction crews estimate it will be only a few days before large aircraft can land there carrying aid.

The photo's don't show it but there seems to be extensive damage to the runway as well as loads of rubbish that ended up on it, closing it until navy crews clean and repair it. As it is a -very- short runway to begin with this is not an easy task since it needs to have a good surface over the entire length for sizeable planes to land.

For anyone that hasn't seen it, the latest forecast has Irma moving westward, back towards the center of Florida. This image should update automatically when the NHC updates it on their end:

Doesn't seem likely but here's hoping the forecast is wrong...

Just saw that. It's not looking good for southern Florida. Especially with a predicted storm surge of 4 to 5 feet around the Everglades and Miami.

This is going to be a terrible disaster. Anyone in the Florida area, please evacuate without delay. Don't risk it!
Thanks for the update Diachi. Also wishing it's wrong.

Came across this:

Right now I would not want to be in or around Miami.

Also here is more thorough and up to date link.

The only positive thing I can see is although Jose is strengthening, it seems to be on track to swerve the US. The only problem being if it carries on with that track, it will be heading for the jet stream bringing stormy weather to the UK.

Luckily (for you), if the storm goes straight up through Florida significantly over land, it should weaken a lot faster but fairly unpredictably.

The concern earlier was that it'd just graze the coast but mostly be over water like Harvey was for a while. That lets it keep power longer and carry more rain.

That should probably give Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina an easier time with rain and wind, but it'll mostly hit Florida.:(

Just checked, and it'll probably stop being a hurricane around the time it crosses the border into Georgia. Looks like heavy rain will be the only major concern further north.

Edit: Also, it's downgraded to Cat 4 and will likely hit Miami at this intensity.

My daughter lives in Tampa :(

Can't reach her, don't know what's up. I'm hoping she is leaving, on the way out now.

The latest forecast predicts landfall further west than yesterday's forecast... Might get lucky with this one...

I didn't know you had a daughter in Florida, Chris. My thoughts are with both of you.
