im curious to see how many people here use linux. I switched from xp to ubuntu about 8 months ago and i love it!

I started using Linux when I was pretty young (basically the day we got high speed internet) and haven't turned back. Currently, most of my systems run Arch Linux, but I also like Gentoo and Slackware. I've also tested about a dozen other distros, but I don't really like the ones that have huge default installations. Arch gives you pretty much nothing when you install it, so you can customize your system from the ground up. I barely use any RAM and my systems are lightning-fast.

i love linux but dont use for a desktop, although fedora 11 is my fav desktop OS

centos fav server OS

backtrack 3 favorite penetration testing OS=)

LMAO.. why do you know about BT3 C0ld?? naughty naughty! yeah I used to have knopix on my home made computer (i call it home made cause i pieced it together every time i found a piece of computer parts at the tip or garage sale!) i was 13 years old when i finally got all the pieces together! (happy times!). I have free copies of linux btw if any one wants them.. I'm pretty sure I got ubuntu, xubuntu and edubuntu! you can have as many as you want! pm me!

I had BT3 virtual boxed for wireless internet sabotage!! (ohh the good old days!). But now I really got to concentrate on studies.. last year of skool! so no more playing around!

Im pretty pumped for the new nokia n900 to come out next month. Its running linux

I am currently running a dual boot of Ubuntu and vista on my laptop(vista is FUBARed at the moment). I plan to change out ubuntu for Freebsd... My desktop was running fedora 8 but is currently running 98:D.

EDIT - I also forgot to mention that my Ipod(1st generation Nano) runs linux ;)

I used to use debian for years, but I've switched to ubuntu about 2 years ago because I was getting sick of doing things manually, and ubuntu has great support these days. I still use windows on some of my computers, since let's face it, gaming has never been linux's strong suit... I run a dual boot of ubuntu and XP64 (going to try out w2k8 r2 soon) on my home desktop, I run ubuntu on my laptop, and Win7 on my work computer. My wireless router, my cell phone, my xbox, and my NAS also run linux.

Well, he is after all a professional security expert... I guess he needs to use it for his job. Not all "hacker tools" are used for black-hat purposes you know, people often have a legitimate need to hack their own network to test security.

I've planned to add linux to my system some times, but could someone explain me what benefits may I get by using a dual book Vista-linux?

Linux is generally faster than windows but it's less forgiving. Windows has multiple layers of redundancies that prevent you from "actually deleting" stuff; if you press delete on linux, it's pretty much gone. Same goes when changing stuff; windows can be booted in "last known good configuration" in the case you screw something up; in linux, you may or may not be able to recover. Linux definitely has the upper hand in terms of virus/spyware resistance, etc. I recommend downloading a live CD and playing around with it before installing it...

I've used a LiveCD some times, and I really don't use this kind of features you mentioned, but considering I install Linux, is there really going to be a speed difference? Also, is it going to recognize all of my hardware?

Then, is there a Linux version of most of the software?

What distribution and why do you recommend me?

Yes, it'll run much, much faster off your hard drive than off a cd.. As for your hardware, if it's not detected and working from within the livecd, chances are it's not going to work in the install either.. Most times you can get any hardware working, though it can often end up being far more complicated than it is in windows.

Yes, there's linux versions or equivalents to almost all software.. What do you use? Usually if there's no actual linux version of something there'll be a similar program that does all the same things, but it might be laid out differently. Other things you can actually just run the windows version under wine (a windows "emulator").

I'd recommend ubuntu for your first distro, it's by far the most painless and has the biggest community support for noobs.

I don't really frequent the ipodlinux forums too much. TBH, I've only lurked there once or twice for install info. The install went pretty smoothly so I never had to post anything...
