Hey Guys. I really need help from anyone that knows potentiometer's and stuff like that.
I have a Yamaha DX-100 Vintage Synthesizer and it has these " pitch " and modulation wheels" I was using the Modulation Wheel And all the sudden it would not move. This keyboard is well over 25years old so im guessing why it broke.
The pot it has i looked online and the website did not have it.
I called yamaha and they did not have the part anymore.
The potentiometer is manufactured by " Japan Alps " The number on the potentiometer says "618R 103B" all it has is 3 wires connected to the pot and all the pot does is go up and down its a rotary switch. is there any substitute i can use for thiss so i can still have teh same effect !! please help me !!

not a problem, do you have a ohm meter ? if so measure across the outside terminals and find the resistance let me know and if I have that one I can send it to you, if I don't I know where to get them.

Peace All Pyro... :eg:

Wes, get a Multimeter (they're cheap around there, 10 bucks) and measure resistance. If you don't know how to do it ask me and I'll teach you. If you don't want to buy one you can send it to me and I'll do it for you and send you a replacement. Of course it'll be a regular pot and you can just send it to someone in the US so as to spend less money. They're really cheap (3 dollars at the most).

Maybe you can go to radioshack and ask for help..

Ok on my Multimeter set to the ohm setting the potentiometer Ranges from 11-13 ohms but then it stays steady at 12 ohm.

This is using the 2000k setting on my multimeter.

Then it's 12kOhm. Get a 10kOhm or 12 (or 13,7). Not much more or less than that and replace it. If you don't know how to let me know.

EDIT: Remember that the knob has to be all the way left or right so you can measure the MAXimum resistance.

No need to turn, measure between the two outer pins. But im pretty sure its 10k.

Edit your setting need to be 20K.

He won't get a reading on the outer pins. He has to turn it all the way and measure between left and center or right and center regarding which way he turned it. I don't recognize it but I agree with FML, I too think it's around 10k.

You could probably find that very thing easily from digikey or mouser.. just download a catalog.

The two outer pins has the highest resistance at all times. If you don't get a reading then the track has burned out, or your setting isn't on the 20k. Also it helps to desolder the pot from the wires so you don't get a miss-reading from the board.

Listen to this ladles and jelly spoons, he is correct. You DO NOT need to turn the knob to measure the resistance, you measure between the two outer pins, not the center pin ( wiper ) and one of the outer pins.
