HELP, for some strange reason my computer can't see my CD/DVD disc drive, it will read any thing I plug into the USB ports, it can see the "C" drive and the "D" partition but it's just like there is no CD/DVD drive there, but it dose show up in the list of hardware and it says it's working properly ? how come I can't see it then when I click on "my computer" also this is a lap top and when I push the open button the door opens and closes.
Help, anyone know about this ? it just seemed to disapear about a week ago.

Thanks !

Sounds like the channel on the board dumped. The rom could have gotten unplugged from the connector also. Take it out, and slide it back in again. If it doesnt help, try popping the drive open, and check the connections.

I realy need help not jokes, Now that is the way to get your post count up, do you think I would have asked for help if it would do what you suggest it would. My grandma used to say if you can't say something good about someone you shouldn't say any thing at all, I think I will go aginst her advice here !
Realy tell me what you were thinking when you made that statment, or were you doing what I suspect increasing your post count all the way up to ONE, Realy I would think for a first post any one could have come up with something better than that !

BTW Welcome to the forum :na:

It looks like it's still connected because it's coming up in the hardware list, as TJ said pull the wire out the back of the CD drive inside the case, it will look like a thin wide cable, normally red/pinkish, as well as a long cable which is the power cable and goes in too the left of the reddish/pinkish cable.

Make sure the PC is off when you do it, if that fails google it and if that fails take a large bat and make some good use of the waist metal.

Hopefully you get it fixed.

Hey pyro... can you try this...

Go to start, right hand click on my computer and press manage. Then in the left panel, press device manager. Under the heading disk drives (or similar heading) right hand click on your drive and click uninstall.

If a prompt box pops up, press the appropriate button to continue. Next restart the computer and when it starts up, it should find your drive. When the box comes up saying found new hardware, it will ask if you want to connect to the internet, press no, not this time and press next. Then press on install software automatically. If all goes well it will set the default drivers for the CD/DVD drive and it should work like new. If not, have a look at the manufactures website for firmware or driver updates.

EDIT: after all that... if it continues to be a pain... try a system restore to a previous date where the drive was working.

Hope that helped -Adrian

This is a laptop so there will be no wires going into the back of the drive, it will be a slot in Drive Module.

My sugestion will be to to navigate to Control Panel, Device Manager, how you do this will depend on your version of Windows.

Once in Device Manager see if "DVD/CD-Rom drives" is in the list, if so clik on it to drop down to see the list of attached devices, your drive should be listed here.

If it is right click on it and uninstall. Now restart your PC and it should re-install itself and become visible in "My Computer"

Hope this helps.

EDIT...Beat me to it Bob!

We know, but you can open the ROM drive to find the connection to the slot. There is a ribbon cable in there. I've fixed a drive where the power cable just fell off.

There was a system error (don't remember really the reason, sorry) that was writing or altering wrong values registry keys, making the CD/DVD drives disappearing, on XP in the past ..... M$ claimed it was solved, but i see time by time it still happens, and none found a real reason, til now.

Anyway, you can try to see if the reason is this one, deleting these registry keys and trying to restart:

Code:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdr4_2K]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdralw2k]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdudf]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UdfReadr]

copy this code as is in the notepad and save it as "test.reg" (or whatever name you want)

Do a backup copy of your registry, and set a recovery point on your machine (always better do it before any modification, also if not needed)

double-click on the .reg file and choose to add the modifications to the registry

Restart

If the problem was created from that registry modifications, it must disappear, and your drive reappear, if not, then there is something wrong (can also be the drive that is dead)

What version of windows are you using? If you're using windows 7, you'll notice that "My Computer" is divided up into sections. The first section is "Hard disk drives". In this section, you'll notice an arrow on the left side pointing towards the bottom right. If you click that arrow, it will be pointing perfectly to the right, and now your hard drive is hidden. Is there a section under this titled "Devices with removable storage" with an arrow pointing to the right like I just mentioned?

Also, use system restore as a last resort. It usually creates more problems than it fixes. Also do what Adrian said about reinstalling the drivers. If that don't work shoot me a PM and I'll help you.
