Yes, the second stage could be tested independently from the first stage just to see what happens. Then if that's good, the 2 stages can be tested as a whole.

OT: looking forward to next weeks exciting event. :D

Guess you missed the thread. Was wondering anyways...

Ok, I see what you mean. Very nice looking piece of gear there. Congrats!

Before I was going to test the second stage, I wanted to see what the first stage would do with a new coil. The first stage is weaker than my earlier coil or the spring contacts are slowing it down. I'm not sure which is happening, but the projectile will not pierce even one side of an aluminum can. I will test it as a 2 stage tomorrow, just to see if if the circuit works.

I decided to use a spring...it reaches barely into the barrel...almost no resistance. The spring has about the size they use for ball-pens.
I can draw something for you if you want...show you the way I did it.

If you want to make a drawing that might help. I tested it as a 2 stage and it pierced one side of an aluminum can, but I don't think the 2nd stage fired(SCR didn't fire). I noticed that the "charge" light did not go out in the second stage, which would have happened if the 2nd stage capacitor bank had discharged. Strange that only my 2 stage directly shorted with the projectile has ever worked. xD

More tests late tomorrow.

Will try upload something later this evening...4 hours maybe.

Did you test your contacts? Mine werent soldered well, so there was no current flowing...

Always test your SCRs before mounting/soldering.

How did you test your SCR's ? I'm thinking that you mean to hook up the capacitor bank and just discharge it with the SCR's. Yes, the ball-point pen spring sounds good. Any diagram/drawing would be helpful. I need MOAR power in the first stage, so maybe another barrel with 8 layers of 20AWG will help vs. the 6 layers that seems to be weak. I was using 21AWG and getting really powerful acceleration. *scratches head*

Yes the battery will have + terminal tied to the anode and gate. The battery's - terminal will be tied to the cathode. And the LED on the gate will show that the SCR is being turned on.

Edit: Well actually the LED would be attached to either the anode or cathode, showing that the SCR has been successfully energized by the gate.

Successfully fired the 2 stage and pierced both sides of an aluminum can. Not as powerful as I would have hoped but it did work. I have to optimize the coil size in each stage for the greatest acceleration. Making progress. ^^

Edit: I'm going to splice barrels with the best coil of each. This way I just glue a sleeve over the 2 ends that would join 2 barrel pieces. It should work well I'm thinking. I will update tomorrow night.
