Wouldnt make sense to use a laser instead of a simple IR LED....its light....300.000km/h ^^

Regarding triggering: I meant switching on the coils AFTER the first.
You need contacts reaching barely into the barrel...the stages are assembledjust like the first is, but the contacts replace your fire-trigger-push.-button-switch. That easy ^^

Regarding IR:
We're laserists, we prefer lasers than leds. Period.

regarding triggering: I don't understand but thats ok ^^

In this case, laser suck xD now he is in shock probably.

Yes you do understand....think about it for a minute. You have a 2. coil on your barrel.
The projectile is condctive...2 contacts, one on each side...the slug closes the cirtuit...
How about now? Got it?

Got it. But, the contacts should be perfecly aligned and offer no resistance, else the slug will slow down.

2 tiny spring wires (steel) wont mean any serious resistance...I did it. So its proven already. And I wasnt the first one btw...just saying.
Its the most reliable and as well the easiest principle of triggering.

Try it out. Make a 2 stage ^^ its worth it. Ask Milli.

Got a question, curious if anyone else has come across the answer yet. I'm wondering how bad the inductance of the coils are on the capacitors. The design I am working on would place the capacitors directly below the coils. Probably about 5mm or so apart. I've got little to no understanding as to the internals of capacitors, and I'm starting to wonder about eddy currents in the capacitors themselves both wasting power, and damaging the caps. Anyone read up yet on this?

Check out the interior of my gun...shown in the vid for maybe 2 sec (my bad).
Directly beneath them. I have placed the coil...I used 1mm steel-stripes to shield everything against everything.

On my other coilgun, they were directly above the coil....no effect.

Your welcome.
I thought by myself, using steel-sheets should concentrate the fields at the entrance anyhow, so its not a bad idea at all.

I've got an aesthetic question for ya...how do you shape all the metal for your housing? I've watched several of your videos and for the life of me I can't figure out how you do it, care to share? :D

I figure by hand, but do you use a form or just the edge of a table and bend it?

Sounds good, I'll give it a try. Is there a reason you use copper/brass instead of say sheet aluminum?

I use Aluminum alot. But its not as hard as brass...when I need a steady durable surface I like to use brass...

My coilgun will be ready for 2 stages this week. I scored another 27 disposable cameras from another photo dept. This time I only found one 160uF cap. :/ That's OK, because I'm anxious to see the second circuit board triggered by the projectile. Too much fun! :D

So I have to cut another piece of C channel tomorrow for the second capacitor bank and secure it to the front of the circuit enclosure.
