Most of the problems I see driving are down to the drivers themselves, but there's something to be said for good road and city planning. There are many many spots where merging onto the highway, with no ramp to speed up at all, and sometimes poor visibility, means an unpleasant game of chicken. Others with horrible left turns across multiple lanes, and many others where roads and highways merge so badly that in all but the lightest traffic, there is always a backup.

Personally I'm always willing to drive a bit extra, instead of sitting in traffic, and knowing local roads, and different ways to get to the same places, do avoid certain spots.

It seems the people at Waze had the same idea... Waze Wants to Help You Avoid 'Difficult Intersections' | News & Opinion | PCMag.com

Google (which owns Waze) has a massive amount of data on traffic patterns, and extremely detailed maps, it would be nice if they deployed that data, in order to help people customize their trips, beyond the options available now. For people who are retired, have plenty of time, but are older, it would be a fantastic option especially. Would also be great for the rest of us who despise standing in traffic.

Don't get me started on highway entrance ramps. It's bad enough that people can't seem to accelerate when they have enough room. Those stupid cloverleaf intersections piss me off. If it says 25, I can usually do about 45, drop it down to 3rd, punch it, and have no problems. It's almost impossible to do at some intersections due a bunch of traffic though. There's always someone that's too afraid to do 25.

I have Waze but rarely use it for directions. I mainly use it for hazards. I don't worry about cops since I don't go more than 5 over. They are false flags 99% of the time anyway. It's dumb to report a cop that has someone pulled over. Just report it as a vehicle stopped.

This is a personal choice. On german highways that have no speed limits some people drive slower (like 120-130 km/h) saving on fuel consumption, whilst others drive faster (200 km/h is not that uncommon) to just get there faster even if that costs more.

The recommended speed on german highways is 130 km/h, but it is not mandatory to drive that fast or faster. If you want to drive slower you can stay in the right lane with the trucks doing about 80 km/h, and have to be -very- careful when overtaking those since other cars do not really expect you to slug along at 100 km/h on any other lane. This is why cars are mirrors, just look WAAAAY further back

Yeah, in the middle east you get drivers pulling crazy stunts on public roads, drifting, driving on 2 wheels, burn-outs at traffic lihgts and such.

In eastern asia it gets a different kind of crazy: think of places like bangkok, jakarta and such. Traffic just flows around eachother often with little regard for even traffic lights. This system mostly works, but not -that- well when you look at traffic casualties per capita.

I've been down there quite often and still find it daunting to cross a road on foot that is the equivalent of a 6 lane highway in western europe (walking on highways is illegal here, trying to cross them will probably end you in a mental hospital).

The best way to cross such roads is to simply start walking, and most importantly, keep walking. Drivers are used to pedestrians crossing and will swerve around you as long as you keep constant speed. If you for some reason decide to stop, for example between "lanes" you have a big problem though since noone knows your intentions any more. Lanes are just rough guidelines there, and people will drive over the middle of lane dividers, often to avoid hitting pedestrians crossing the road

That reminds me of Bangkok, and sukhumvit road so much. The traffic laws there basically amount to a giant game of chicken, and while the cars and tuk tuks are bad enough, the people on mopeds are just insane. They make the occasional lane splitter here look like a boyscout.

The principle there does seem to be to not hesitate, and as you sad, not to alter speed. After getting used to it for a couple of nights, it was actually A LOT of fun just to sit at a bar near an intersection and to see people cross the road for a little while. Definitely not a town I'd ever suggest renting a car in, or going to for a wholesome family vacation.

Incredibly in my three weeks there, I only saw 2 minor accidents.

I know about driving the autobahn since I was there for 3 years. I had a 97 f150 4x4 over there. The fastest I got that things going was about 113 mph down a hill. What pissed me off where the semis that would cut you off to pass another semi that was going <5 kmph faster.

Both the written and physical driving tests in the US are pointless. I wish more cops would do something about people doing more than 5 over, cruising in the left lane, tailgating/cutting people off, not using turn signals and running red lights/stop signs.
None of this amounts to a hill-o-beans compared to all of the illegal aliens driving with NO LICENSE, NO INSURANCE, NO MONEY, and NO INCENTIVE to even stop for accidents and traffic violations. Driving tests serve 2 purposes: 1) it gives people jobs that can't otherwise get jobs; and 2) it is a panacea for the general public to make them think their elected officials actually care and are doing something about their safety while driving.

The driving and written tests are the absolute bare minimum, and they suck, but they are better than nothing.

People driving uninsured, staying here illegally, and fleeing accidents, that's a whole other set of issues.

And let's be honest, if our government wanted the borders to be secured, they would be, and they would have been a long time ago. That has to be the first step in resolving the immigration issue, to the extent that it can be resolved.

Oh well, that is bangkok traffic.

I've managed to cross many crazy roads there without getting hit, but it somehow still feels lucky to make it across unharmed.

I did get hit by a tuk-tuk though while at the side of the road. Luckily just a flesh wound that healed on its own, but that driver seemed to be intent on leaving the scene asap.

I'm not really sure how difficult driving tests are between countres, but here in holland they are not that easy to pass. I failed at the first attempt when a snowstorm moved in and i overlooked someone on a moped, so i suggest doing these things in summer.

Another thing i remember is taking a driving lesson drunk. I sort of forgot i had one in the evening and had a good meal with fellow students and lots of wine. This is not illegal here though since when taking driving lessons the teacher is formally driving the car, despite being only able to operate the pedals and the steering wheel from a really odd angle.

It felt like an incredible game of frogger to me. As bad as it was in bangkok, the way drivers behaved in koh phangan on the road was just insane. ~40mph on winding, very very hilly road with constant blind spots terrible visibility and in a crap van that should have been retired a decade back. Ko phi phi with it's ban on cars was a very refreshing break after.

More stringent testing in the US would go a very very long way toward insuring greater safety on the roads, and I would love to see testing become a requirement for all drivers every 10 years, anyone over 65 and up to 80, 5 years, and every 3 years after that.

I have heard from lots of people that driving test in germany is much better.

With all the technology being stuffed into cars nowdays, instead of shitty black boxes I don't see a reason that a built in camera system can't be included as an option on EVERY new car either. People do absolutely behave better with a camera on them.

We have a system like that in the netherlands. I think it starts when you reach the age of 70, and after that need medical checks to retain your drivers license. Based on your health you can get anoter 5 years on it if all is well, but also shorter periods if it is expected you will become unfit to drive sooner.

I think it should depend a bit on the area you actually drive in though. Holland is one of the most population dense countries in the world, and highway traffic can be fairly hectic especially around the (clustered) larger cities.

In rural areas far less skill is required to drive to do your shopping and such. Keeping unsafe drivers off the road is important, but so is keeping people self-reliant if by any means possible.

For example my mother will reach the age of 78 in a few weeks. She's fine driving around during daytime in the fairly quiet part of the country she lives in and poses no hazard really. I doubt she could cope with metropolitan traffic on 14 interweaving lanes around the place i live when it's dark, but in all honesty i'm not sure those things are safe to navigate for anyone

There are some spots that are definitely not designed with any kind of safety in mind. I mean come on? Practically blind merge from a full stop onto a highway with cars doing ~60mph.

My usual route home, I at this point know to expect at least one accident per week. Definitely not safe for anyone.

Personally in addition to the vision test, I'd like for a test to be devised to measure people's abilities to judge distances.

@diachi - The surveillance is already there, whether we like it or not. If the FBI or whatever agency wanted to, they could very very easily use my phone to track exactly where I am. That's the kind of surveillance that bothers me a great deal. Dashcams on the other hand, I'm all for.

The problem is, the 4th amendment needs to be updated to reflect the realities of modern life, and not so much restrict whether information cane be gathered, but a much greater emphasis be placed on how it may be used.

Edit: http://wfla.com/2016/05/31/habitual-...er-motorcycle/ Without the camera, chances are that guy would only face the lesser charges. There are times when I read the news, and wonder if that planet in star trek, where all conscious infractions have one punishment, painless death, was not a better option.

It has even shifted and cemented my views on what the UK should do in three days - LEAVE the EU.

The fact that the media, the American government and god knows who else, still values the feelings of Muslims over LGBT lives disgusts me and makes me ashamed to have once called myself liberal.

The sooner people start calling a spade a spade, the better. Western society cannot integrate with one that seeks to destroy its values and eliminate it. Keep your guns, and keep one locked and loaded for me.

there are several news articles now that I have read, where LGBT people not unlike myself, frightened by recent events have dramatically changed their political stance, in some cases to Trump! More and more people are realising that we need to quell this religious madness.
Trencheel I couldn't agree more, it's good to hear you're no longer a libereral. Did you know that if Turkey becomes an E.U. member that 12,000,000 of their people will want to move to Europe, I think that would be a disaster, imagine 12,000,000 more muslims.

About the Brexit vote, I have been watching the news today and they said that no exit polling is allowed! That is suspicious to me because that's how you can tell if there was some voter fraud. Here if there is more than a 2% difference between the exit polling and the results then it looks suspicious and needs to be investigated. In 11 of the primaries here that Hillary won, she won by 5% - 10% more than what the exit polling indicated. Do you trust the voting in the U.K.?

Ohh, I thought you meant a camera watching what's going on inside the vehicle. Yeah, nothing wrong with dashcams - I've thought about getting a GoPro or something similar to stick on my dash - at the least it'll capture some of the things I get up to in the winter when no one is around.

A multi camera setup would be ideal, with the option for driver to turn the inside recording cameras on and off. One guy I met had a setup with a front facing camera, a rear facing camera, actually at the rear glass, and one from the door/ceiling on the passenger side that provided a view of the driver, some of the backseat and a little of the passenger seat. Looped recording to a tablet in glove compartment, hidden usb in trunk, and transmitting at very low quality to server, along with gps coordinates. Also had 3 microphones, one inside, one by rear tail light, one at the front of the car. One button control to turn on inside cameras and all microphones.

Seems like extreme overkill, but it makes perfect sense given that his car was literally torn apart once after a "speeding" traffic stop, and cops decided to look for drugs. Didn't find any.
