Actually I kind of hope this bill moves forward.

So it can be demolished in court.

"If the citizen fails to obtain the insurance, then by simply owning the firearm, they will be in violation of the law."

This is a very clear, and blatant attempt to essentially make gun ownership unaffordable.

As for my thoughts on this thread... I think there are a lot of variables that contribute to gun violence in the US. The scientific way of dealing with the problem is to eliminate as many variables as possible.

Which variables to deal with is now unfortunately a part of the political wheeling-and-dealing in DC.

Ok, yes excluding the Civil War...

You have to admit though, what's going on now is rather eerie. We have one extremely polarizing right leaning president for eight years, and then another left leaning one. Although Obama is nowhere near as far to the left, as Bush was to the right.

There is some variability from state to state, but . . . . .

Suppressor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Canada, a device to muffle or stop the sound of a firearm is a "prohibited device" under the Criminal Code.[24] A prohibited device is not inherently illegal in Canada but it does require an uncommon and very specific prohibited device license for its possession, use, and transport. Suppressors cannot be imported into the country by civilians;[25] special licensing is required for businesses to import and sell suppressors, and they are typically only available to law enforcement, conservation agencies, and the military.

In the United States, taxes and strict regulations affect the manufacture and sale of suppressors under the National Firearms Act. They are legal for individuals to possess and use for lawful purposes in thirty-nine of the fifty states.[26] However, a prospective user must go through an application process administered by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), which requires a Federal tax payment of USD $200 and a thorough criminal background check. The USD 200.00 buys a revenue stamp, which is the legal document allowing possession of a suppressor. The market for used suppressors in the U.S. is consequently very poor, which has driven innovations in the field (buyers want the height of technology, because they are basically "stuck" with the purchase). Suppressors are available in other countries for under USD 40,[27] but they can be of crude construction, using cheap materials and baffle designs[citation needed]. The following jurisdictions have explicitly banned any civilian from possessing a suppressor: California, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and the District of Columbia.

The Federal legal requirements to manufacture a suppressor in the United States are enumerated in Title 26, Chapter 53 of the United States Code.[28] The individual states and several municipalities also have their specific requirements.

Peace,
dave

Default Re: Gun Discussion

I read through a few pages of this, not too impressed with the reasons given by anyone for restriction of our right to bear arms here in the USA.

I spent a great deal of my life working with and developing technologies to defend this country. I have no issue with laying down my life to defend the Constitution, whether that threat is from a foreign or domestic source. The right to bear arms shall not be infringed, PERIOD! Nowhere in the second ammendment does it state that we must obtain permits, licenses, pay fees, ect. Those are forms of infringement. I refuse to apply for a concealed weapons permit, ect because I refuse to accept that I require anyones permission to demonstrate my right to bear arms.

Having said that, I will also say that I have used firearms to defend myself and my family in the past, and that DOES include pointing loaded guns at law enforcement officers.

I have had robbery attempts against myself and my family, in which I was able to defend myself and them by holding the individuals involved at gunpoint until law enforcement arrived.

One was a home invasion in south Florida where a drugged up armed individual broke in and thought he had the upper hand on us, until his eyes focused on the Uzi pistol I was pointing at him. His sick smile turned to horror really quick, and he couldn't drop his gun fast enough! I held him at gunpoint until the cops arrived.

Another was an attempted carjacking in south Florida. He opened the back door and jumped in while I was stopped at a light. He put a knife to my throat. I broke his arm and held him at gunpoint while waiting for the cops to arrive.

Two cops entered the back door of my business in south Florida one night and waltzed right in to find themselves staring down the barrel of that same Uzi pistol. They were caught off-guard and tried admonishing me for leaving the door open. I told them they were lucky I recognized they were wearing uniforms and didn't shoot them. We had a good laugh and all was good, but they never did that again!

A few years after I moved out of Florida some fed tried violating my 4th ammendment rights by entering my property without a warrant, claiming he wanted to talk to me. My property is registered posted with the courthouse, and tresspass after warning is a felony here. He refused to leave, after being told by myself AND the sherrif that he had to leave. I gave him 5 minutes to leave, which I was not even obligated to do. He did not, so I put 90 rounds of full military ammo through his car with my AK-47. He ran and never returned. What was left of his car had to be towed off.

If you don't like guns, I respect that. That is your right. I also respect law enforcement, as long as they stick to doing their job legally. But NOBODY is going to take away my rights, and that includes this current or any future administration. Any attempt to infringe upon my constitutional rights will be met with the same deadly force that I reserve for ANY criminal that tries to commit a crime against me or my property. Simple as that, and the cops around here fully agree with my point of view. It can take an hour or more for a cop to arrive if called, so everyone out here must be capable of defending ourselves. Even when the tornadoes came through last year and martial law was declared for the area, the federal government told the local cops to disarm anyone caught carrying weapons. The sherrif refused because he knows almost everyone here is armed and he likes it that way. Our crime rate here is almost non-existent because of this. This is why I moved here, to get away from the high crime elsewhere.

Bob

My opinion on firearms is basically the same as my general view. I hate to see items blanket banned just because a small percentage of people can't use them properly. Same goes for fireworks, certain knives, guns, LASERS, ... etc.

That's like banning cars just because some idiots drive drunk/dangerously and kill themselves/others. I understand that cars are more vital to society than say fireworks, but it really shouldn't be the government's job to decide what people enjoy. Just to protect society from items so dangerous, such as weapons of mass destruction, that the risk to others is just too great. (If any common items are going to be blanket banned it should be cars, they kill far more innocent people than those other items, might help the environment a bit too )

On the other hand I am not opposed to some sort of licensing system and training course (like with motor vehicles), as there are people in this world I wouldn't trust with a screwdriver. As long as it's simply "do you know how to safely use this item" and not "why do you need this".

Anyway, just my opinion as I have never owned or used any firearms. Just always annoys the crap out of me when things get banned and changed for everyone based on a couple idiots.
