Guide to Getting Involved in LPF: Social Groups

Hello,

Many of us have joined groups, been invited to groups, or maybe even created groups during our time here at LPF, but unfortunately groups end up not being very active.

This is for a couple of reasons:
1. It is somewhat behind the scenes. Some do not think to look or are not aware.
2. People do not know that they must subscribe manually to groups.

So, because I would like to see Groups realize their potential, I have created a video to show you all how to subscribe to groups. When you join a group, you do not automatically get notifications when new things happen or new posts are made. Many people, used to becoming subscribed to things by posting, do not know how to manually add a subscription.

So, that is how to subscribe to groups! But now, how do you get involved with groups?

Couple of ways:

1. Make friends. As you make friends, some people will invite you to groups they are involved in.
2. Show interest in things that interest you. When I showed interest in Laser Projectors, hakzaw1 invited me into a group about Projectors!
3. Search. At the top of every LPF screen is a bar of links like this:

UserCP FAQ Donate Community Calendar LPFSearch NewPosts Search QuickLinks LogOut

Click on the Community tab and then click on Social Groups. The page 3that you come to will have a search bar on it so you can go through the groups and decide what you want to be a part of.

And Lastly, #4: Make a group of your own. If you have searched and searched, and you cannot find a group in a certain niche or on a certain subject, then take action and make a group for you and your fellow compadres.

------

With the existence of Social Groups on the forum, there is really no excuse for making friends and discussing things you are passionate about. When the main portion of the forum is going slow, Groups should be the place where you are getting notifications and chatting with people.

Now go out there and get involved!!! I hope this has been a helpful guide to becoming involved through the use of groups.

Thanks,
Isaac

Thanks BRO!!

its strange that lack of subbing equates to low activity which in turn leads to more inactivity-

JUST to see how many had taken the advice I ALWAYS give about subbing a social group, I put a new discussion (think 'thread')-- FREE LASERS_ PM Me to get yours-

the group had lots of members but only THREE asked about the free lasers- they had subbed the group and read the email-

Whatever your interests are you can start a group-

I really like LEMs-

its great to gather with other laser geeks and 'talk laser' many of us have no or very few local friends who understand 'laser' they fake being interested when i start to mention my newest wavelength-
I know they are thinking 'what is the dang deal with Hak and his LAZORS'- if you go to a LEM you will not hear that or 'Why Lasers--what good are they'? so if you do not have a social group for those like-mined people that live close enough to meet once in a while holding a LEM is harder.. and you should start a new group-

IMO all great LEMs started out very small- it REALLY only takes two for a MINI LEM.

to see the existing list of SGs click 'community' near the top to the left of search.

SGs are in the drop down menu. Your new group can be about anything... some are not laser groups per se. I had hoped there was a way I could send a PM to all in a group at one time -but that cannot be done- you can send the same message to three at a time but in larger group like LSLF( Lone Star Laser Fans) that is tedious- and a PITA- if all subbed the group they would get an email and go read the new 'thread'.. see the new pics posted (you cannot add your pics to the posts- just in the group photo album) subbing tells you when a new memeber joins(AFAIK)or a new discussion has been started.

When you create a new group you have options to choose. When I started ROG ( Reke (et al) Owners Group - was about to leave LPF as a bully troll had killed my buzz here by stalking my every post and thread so i made ROG private -& only I can play GOD and grant access- and if you piss GOD off I can remove you with one finger.

Also i felt that hobby projectors folks were not feeling at home at LPF or at PL. as we are sorta in the middle- I grew weary of some of the Pros at PL who are very anti- China and also seem to have forgotten what it was like when they first began to work with shows and projectors--

another reason i made ROG private was spammers and (sadly) the worst of the newcomers with their endless noob questions - Everybody at ROG knows how to use the search.

- I have no problems with any ROG member who wants to copypasta stuff from ROG onto the open forums and I invite any who ask or are referred by a ROG member.

So... check out the long list of SGs- join any you want and DONT FORGET TO S U B!!! Check the welcome section and send invites to those you find there with interests like the group or located in your area.

The member map is cool and all... but I found it a chore to see by the map all who live in Texas

At the very bottom of a SG there in a list of invited and pending members - sometimes I uninvite those 'pending' and then re-invite so the member sees this along with their PMs and friend requests. I guess some do not join because not much happening there ... why? because most do not S U B.

ATTENTION ALL ROG Members-- there is a lot going on- PJ group buy about to close-
We have 'threads' on modding low cost PJs upgrading the modulation and laser modules-
We are working on learning how to add files to SD cards how to use DMX and midi with PJs. And MORE.
ALSO ATM...
another drawing for a RGB projector-only 13 $50 'donations' will be sold- One lucky member will win a $600 PJ for the cost of his donation(s--(only two per member) ) and $26 to ship CONUS (only) LAST number drawn gets his donation $$$ back 2nd & 3rd place get choice of spyro or lumia kit. -- only two days old and just 10 'spots' left..PM me for moar info - do not post your Q about the give-away here-
THIS is NOT The place-
