I found out what kind of tree that was in my backyard. I also found out what the fruit looking thing is. Here's a picture of it. Let's see if somebody else might know.
This plant usually only grows in the humid hot regions of southwestern China. It's official name is Flowering Plant #E12. A single plant can produce as many as 12 bulbs in a given year, and the plant is now hybridized and farmed mainstream. In the US, it is known as the Candelabra Tree.
When the bulb fully matures, it sheds its outer sheath, exposing the fruit of the E12 tree: the E12 bulb! These are carefully hand-picked and then attached to screw bases and packed in 12-packs to be sold around the world!

:beer: I actually didn't know what it was called a month ago but been seeing it growing in the wild all the time so I looked at Google for what it was and thought it'd be fun to plant one in the garden. Now we have more flies than usual here at home.
