speed control encoder from an analog tape deck...
maybe a pro-grade cassette deck or reel-to-reel

unless the center is a 1 inch long post, then it is a capstan drive?
Gool-use the edit button at the bottom of your post to add to it please.
two posts only minutes apart-not good.

Does it have something to do with controlling the RPM of a record player?

Its a curious thing for sure. Somehow it makes me think of when they recorded audio onto the film reels for cinema, but i'm not quite sure where it fits in ;)

It looks like that thing in the middle of the wheel in a computer mouse.

I don't think so... but it's possible.

All the turntables I grew up with had the speed marks on the edge - those 3 differently spaced rows of black and white squares. They use persistence of vision, was the first time I became aware of that concept...

Those are rotary encoders... so that would make my first guess correct.

On the record players: It was fairly common to have a series of dots on the rim of the turntable, that would appear stationary under 50 or 60 Hz light. Often they'd have a couple of such series, for 33, 45 rpm and such.

So come on HIMNL9 , are you going to tell us what it is so someone can post a picture of something we actually stand a chance of getting? :)

^ LOL, sorry for the delay, but remember that we have different timezones (and sometimes i also need to sleep 5 or 10 minutes :p)

Ok, ok, it's the disc roller from a CD/DVD burner (the part hooked on the motor that keep the disc), seen from the bottom ..... here are other 2 images, the same one seen from the top, and another one already hooked on its motor (and it's a shame that none of you recognized it, with all the DVD burners that peoples here mangle for diodes, LOL :p)

 ..... two keypads from a medical device ? (like the keypads you can find on laptops under the touchpad) ..... wondering if the display in the left is a working display or just the draw of a display .....
