So I decided to make a thread for fun-facts.

Not saying I am going to dump daily facts here. Sort of just like a random fact from time to time that you want to share.

So I will start!

Fun-fact. Laser mice don't work on top of diffraction gratings. I assume this is because the light return to the mouse is split.

Yall's turn!

Fun fact: IRS tax revenues have consistently broken records for the past several years.

Fun fact: Your odds of being audited next year will be lower then they were this year.

Gallium will diffuse into the crystal lattice of most metals and destroy all structural aspects of the sample. It is forbidden from being brought onto aircraft for this reason.

The Arctic & Antarctic Circles(point where the sun can remain above the horizon for at least 24 hours a day 1 time a year is moving northward/southward at a speed of 15 meters per year due to the earth's angle tilt difference of 2 degrees over a period of thousands of years :)

Is this the same with mercury? or the same thing only happens between mercury and aluminum?

I'm not sure if Hg amalgamates with as many metals as Ga does to be honest. I do know that when Ga penetrates metals which normally have a passivating oxide layer (like Al) the Ga prevents passivation and causes the metal to be turned into the oxide powder when exposed to air.

Fact:
If you make an alloy of Ga and Bi it counteracts the wetting agent effect that Ga has. Pure Ga sticks to almost all surfaces; teflon, glass, skin, metals, cloth, plastic, etc. It does not unfortunately retain the natural strength and ductility/malleability that pure Ga has, but instead becomes even more brittle than Bi.

Interesting. Now I know to keep Ga from metals unless I want it to turn them to dust. :D Thanks!

Fun fact:

Mount St. Helen's lost 1,131 feet of elevation in the May 18th 1980 eruption and spewed forth about one cubic mile of dust, ash and debris. The blast leveled over four billion feet of usable timber, enough to build 150,000 homes.

Fun fact :
If A Statue In The Park Of A Person On A Horse Has Both Front Legs In The Air, The Person Died In Battle; If The Horse Has One Front Leg In The Air, The Person Died As A Result Of Wounds Received In Battle; If The Horse Has All Four Legs On The Ground, The Person Died Of Natural Causes.

Gold mine of fun facts:
List of unsolved problems in physics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

One of my own spare time calculations:

Fun fact:
If your average desktop CPU has a clock frequency of around 3 GHz, between two of CPU core cycles, a ray of light has traveled only around 10 centimeters, and electric signals in your computer's circuitry even less.

This is why you can see "squiggly" traces on the mother boards - to make a group of traces approximately the same length, to prevent signal being sent through multiple traces arriving in too great of a time span.

Fun fact: this is total bullshit.
