Touching the edge of the sound barrier would be more accurate. If that plane had exceeded the speed of sound at that kind of close range to the observer the loudness of the sonic boom would have been unimaginable. The shock wave would have probably thrown a person some distance.. Vapor effects don't necessarily mean the sound barrier has been broken, they only signify a pressure front. Awesome video, though!

3 launches until the Shuttle is retired. Then our American astronauts will be hitching rides with the Russians for awhile.

Its such a shame if you ask me

I've been about that far from a sonic boom, and it wasn't nearly THAT bad. You felt it, and it was certainly very loud, but it didn't throw anyone any significant distance.
I have video and pictures somewhere, I'll see if I can dig them up. My brother was stationed on the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier, and when they were returning from a deployment, I got to ride on the boat with him for 3 days at sea, including an airshow from the flight deck of the aircraft carrier. We were standing about 20 yards from them trapping the planes, then we had to go below deck while they re-armed them, and we came back up on deck and were about 20 yards from the planes taking off. Those things at full throttle are LOUD. Then we got to go over the the very edge of the flight deck and watch them do a flight demonstration next to the ship, including the supersonic fly-by, live ordinance dropped at targets in the water, and several other cool things. One of the coolest things I've ever done.
