Hey everyone, drones are becoming more and more popular. I'm starting to see some really cool videos of them which is making me want to buy one.

But I am not sure which ones are the best to get.

I would like one to get at least 10 min of flight time, preferably more. I would like one that the video quality is extremely good even from far distances. And I would like for it to be able to fly at pretty good distances.

Any personal recommendations of some good drones out there?

Here's a video of one that I would like to possibly get but not sure which drone this is:

Before you get into the hobby look into altitude wind reports and weather patterns for your area. I learned this the hard way, as there are maybe 20 total flyable days where I live per year. If you plan on doing any line-of-sight flying (not using FPV) make sure wind speeds are very, very low otherwise you'll need a GPS and altitude-hold compensating drone. Most inexpensive (<$500) drones don't have GPS correction and thus are really only flyable with FPV for windy weather.

Ok cool, thanks for all the info. :thanks:

Which drone do you have? And how much was yours?

I have the I-Fly-4 from Ideafly. I bought it when it was released a few years back and I think it was about $400. After all the accessories and parts I had about $800 total spent in the quad copter hobby. LiPos balloon and die often, each prop is $15 and they break every crash, radio sets are $100 or so, FPV kits are $200, etc. Money goes fast in the hobby.

Yeah, I'd like to have a real nice drone. I've seen different ones from around $200-$1,000+. Just wish I could test fly them all before buying lol

The more people I talk to the better on finding which ones are better than others to help me out

I used to work on a 7 million dollar drone in my last job before I came back to Alaska, even with the sophistication it had, we would never fly them in bad weather, only VFR/clear to broken cloud skies and relatively low winds.

I think multicopters, like lasers and computers, are best if you build them yourself! That way you can make it exactly to your preferences, and learn a lot in the process. It's also quite a bit cheaper than ready-made ones.

I recently finished building a hexacopter and love it. :) Now Im in the process of upgrading it to FPV :D

If you dont go the gimbal and gopro route you can build one relatively cheaply.

Heres a link to a review I did of the Syma X5C. This is a fun and great copter to practice on and get some practice flying. Its only really suited to indoor use though.

Edit: Just saw this which might be interesting and basically the price of parts: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/...opter_Set_w_DJI_FatShark_Afro_Parts_PNF_.html

It has a naza lite and Afro ESCs which are both good. I have a naza V2 and 30 A Afros and they work like a charm. The V2 is a little more expensive, but it comes with a PMU and reputedly better stability. The V2 in GPS mode is incredibly stable even in wind and I can even let go of the controls and it will just sit there. Multistars are cheap and from what Ive read not the best quality, but you could always upgrade later. ;)

Yep, at that price tag there's no good reason to risk it.

At ground there's rarely over 10mph of wind, but up even only 100ft there's gusts over 40mph. I went up about 1000ft once and had to full throttle it just to rein it back in to a safe landing zone. I'm not sure the top speed of my big quad, but it weights 1kg and can lift 1.7kg on top of that, so there's a LOT of power behind it.
