Re: disgusting people

The last apartment I had in Alamogordo, New Mexico, these huge roaches would slip in under the door but I'd always find them dead on the floor. Later I learned the place had been sprayed the year before to kill them, a year later they are still affected by that poison? Made me worry just how much and how toxic my apartment was.

I've been tearing apart old Seagate 1gig hard drives from the heck 80's, they have a stack of disc but big neodymium magnets. I throw away so much beautiful machining and keep the magnets and play with the brushless motor, I shutter to think what they cost back then. Each drive has 4 of these monsters in some beautiful anodized aluminum machining. They are strong.
@cowboy. I am also a lover of neo magnets. I have done the same thing, harvesting them from old drives. I have had some pretty powerful, dangerous ones as well.

I am in the process of making helping hands. I purchased an 8 x 6 x 1/2 inch piece of iron, cleaned the rust, and will coat it with plati-dip. Then I am getting these neos with a screw attachment to which I will connect that cooler hose that I saw in an instructable...to that I will connect either alligators or reverse tweezers. Home Despot also has an LED connected to a magnetic base. This way I will be able to move the arms around as I need them rather than drill holes in this big chunk of iron.

BTW, I can see why you don't throw away those heat sinks. I would not either. I keep heat sinks too. I just scavenged some from a dead PC PSU.

yeah, neo magnets are the best. i have a 50mm wide, 25mm thick disk that can lift more than 150 pounds. needless to say, you would NOT want to get "pinched" by it, seeing as it would be like a full grown man stepping on your fingers with boots that have steel for treads. its a quite scary magnet, it can effect the readings of a compass from 10 feet away.

Re: disgusting people

I have a little cylindrical magnet hanging from a string and those neo's will move it from across the room, same principal.
Have you tried flipping it in your hand and making your compass spin like a motor, you see how timing works and why brushless has such an advantage beyond brush wear.

I took apart an old kenmore small microwave awhile back, it had a dial knob and it was built like a tank anyway I found 2 big round 3in. magnets with a hole in the middle that were wrapped around some type of power supply "sorry for the ignorance" These 2 almost cut my finger off, they are powerful! Now recently I tore apart a color desk top printer and found a maby 9/16 in, round perfectly polished chrome colored magnet that I cant even pull of my fridge with my fingers. RedCowboy Micheal what kind of magnets are these

I don't know about the microwave but the last one should be a nickel plated neodymium, you don't want to use them on the fridge, you may never get them off. I can hardly believe how powerful even the smallest ones are.

No, it's way too dangerous for that. You have to be extremely carefull when handling any neodymium magnet. They can easily break if allowed to smack into a magnetic surface, and can crush your fingers if you get between one and another magnet, or magnetic material.

I feel like I should store it in a lead lined box, thats how scary strong it is. Thats if I can get it off the fridge?....and for those 2 big black ones out of the micro I havent touched them since the first time still on the fridge too.

If it is round, it seems like you should be able to pry it off with the "V" of a claw hammer or crowbar.

Re: disgusting people

Had to deal with a roach infestation years back, not too long after new upstairs neighbors moved in. Not sure if it was entirely related, but, well, I wouldn't be too surprised if it was a mess up there.

Sealed everything in the apartment with foam, and I mean literally every single crack. Completely cleaned everything, and stored EVERYTHING that was remotely edible in plastic containers, or fridge. Also had exterminator come in and go over/spray every single area where there was a sealed over crack.

Even with all that, it still took a little while until I felt comfortable in not washing all dishes/utensils, both before, and after eating.

Absolutely hate bugs. That said, I'm definitely a but guilty of mild hoarding, and not dusting enough

lol. I hate them too. I just wonder what the world would be like if it wasn't for autos and aircraft killing off billions of them a year. Mild hoarding, maybe. I have parts from previous PC builds around. Some are built into other computers. Dusting, yeah. I do vacuum fairly often though.

Re: disgusting people

I had some extended family that moved in for about 2 weeks before they moved to Colorado. They put all their stuff in my attached garage. About 4-5 days after they moved out we got german cockroaches and fleas both. Never had them once in 10 years. (Fleas yes, but not German Cockroaches). We used a flea killer spray, I want to say it was Ortho Home Defense. It didn't do much and I wouldn't really recommend it. What I would HIGHLY recommend is IGR (Insect Growth Regulator). It won't kill the bugs, it just makes it so they cannot breed. You will still need something to kill off the bugs, I don't really know what to suggest here, Diamataceous Earth is all natural and works VERY VERY well, but it is also VERY VERY messy. You can actually eat the stuff (not recommended) and it won't hurt you. It is actually even put in some livestock feed to kill stomach worms and such. It's microscopic "husks" or "shells" of diatomic living creatures that are as hard as glass. The bugs get in it and it shreds them to pieces. The IGR though is what keeps them from ever coming back and is supposedly also safe.

Re: disgusting people

Is the Diamataceous earth your recomending the same that is used to put into the filter system of the swimming pool?....Maby 10 years back I was taking care of a rental house for a neighbor and someone brought in bed bugs that spread like a wild fire never ever seen something like this just how fast it happens, and if you ever have seen bedbugs work it kinda reminds you of how an army of ants work. They lay feces all over the corners of a mattress or sofa and when you try to sweep or pick one up they isntantly pop with the blood of the people they bite leaving anything they occupy useless and trash ridden. They come out at night and were ever you lay down they will follow you by smelling I believe is the carbon dioxide we breath out. Im sorry now the point im asking is after I saw the pest control comp spray then they put down a powder claiming that bud bugs dont have pores in their body and the powder is for them to breath in through their snout, is this the Diamataceous earth Trendkilla.

That's exactly my problem. I have a ton of odds and ends, where electronics are concerned, that's especially true. I guess if I had a bigger apartment or house with a garage it would be less of an issue, but with a relatively small apartment, it does become an issue.

At least in november I also forced myself to go through old clothes, and ended up putting aside 3 40 gallon bags of stuff to donate.

Re: disgusting people

Just dropped by my friend's new PC shop-(roach free) and he showed me some parts that looked brand new.. when the customer dropped off the PC is was the most filthy he had ever seen-BUT- his new partner has a bath thing they can drop parts into and it has a grease solvent & sonic vibration the cleans everything like new..

I has an idea about a thread with new ideas for existing products like shrink tubing-and those HD magnets......IMO the list is never -ending--

I got almost free white king size bed sheets and I place a HD magnet in the corners and I can hang it in a flash to metal walls or the iron pieces I have attached to the walls/corners etc
- I can set up and make videos & Pics real fast and the take down is even quicker-I use these for projectors -lumia etc- the bigger magnets are actual too powerfull
