:(

:cryyy:

I woke up this morning to news that Chris Cornell of Sound Garden, Audio Slave.. among other side projects had passed away this morning.

Tragic news for those of us that grew up with his music and multi-faceted lyrics. Chris was a majorly talented individual that put everything he had into what he loved.

Police are calling his death an apparent suicide.

Cornell’s representative, Brian Bumbery, said in a statement that the singer’s death was “sudden and unexpected.”

He added that the “Fell On Black Days” performer’s family will be “working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause.”

The “I Am The Highway” singer was found with a band around his neck inside a MGM Grand casino hotel room around midnight, according to police.

A family friend who was called to check in on Cornell forced his way into the hotel room and discovered the singer unresponsive on the bathroom floor, cops said.

Dontae Freeman, a spokesman for the Detroit Police Department, called Cornell’s death an “apparent suicide.”

More details will become available through the day Thursday, Freeman said.

Soundgarden was slated to perform at the Rock on the Range festival in Columbus, Ohio, Friday.

According to reports, one of the final songs Soundgarden performed Wednesday night at the Fox Theater was a cover of Led Zeppelin's "In My Time of Dying," which features the lyrics: "In my time of dying, I want nobody to mourn / All I want for you to do is take my body home."

Like the sun we will live to rise
Like the sun we will live and die and then ignite again
Like the sun we will live to rise again, again.

I just noticed that he was in Detroit, not far from me, sad news.
I just looked at the Detroit Free Press site, and they had this latest news to report.

"The Medical Examiner has completed the autopsy on 52-year-old Chris Cornell, the Soundgarden musician who died last night in Detroit. The cause of death has been determined as hanging by suicide. A full autopsy report has not yet been completed. There is no additional information at this time."

Edit: They were here at the Fox Theater in Detroit last night.

I didn't know Chris Cornell by his work. It seems like some of the truly talented people also live with depression as was the case of Vincent Van Gogh, and more recently, Robin Williams. It would seem that this dark life that these individuals live is also the spark of their rare talent. At least that is the assumption of many in the psychology field.

52 is way to young. Sad that's all he thought of himself. :(

I didn't know of him until now

"Suicide Is Painless"

Through early morning fog I see
Visions of the things to be
The pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see...

That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

The game of life is hard to play
I'm gonna lose it anyway
The losing card I'll someday lay
So this is all I have to say

Suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

The sword of time will pierce our skins
It doesn't hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger...watch it grin, but...

Suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

A brave man once requested me
To answer questions that are key
Is it to be or not to be
And I replied 'oh why ask me?'

And suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

...and you can do the same thing if you please

------------------

but.... suicide is not painless to those left behind, incredibly painful for family.

Interesting that you chose the theme song to the movie "MASH". I remember that movie when it came out and the lyrics to it's theme. I prefer a different song about suicide by Jackson Browne called "The Dancer". I'm sure you can find it on YouTube. It's worth a listen.

The Dancer By: Jackson Browne

Keep a fire burning in your eye
And pay attention to the open sky
You never know what will be coming down
I don't remember losing track of you
You were always dancing in and out of view
I must have thought you'd always be around
Always keeping things real by playing the clown
Now you're nowhere to be found

I don't know what happens when people die
Can't seem to grasp it as hard as I try
It's like a song I can hear playing right in my ear I can't sing
I can't help listening
And I can't help feeling stupid standing around
Crying as they ease you down
'Cause I know that you'd rather we were dancing
Dancing our sorrow away
No matter what fate chooses to play

Just do the steps that you've been shown
By everyone you've ever known
Until the dance becomes your very own
No matter how close to yours another's steps have grown
In the end there is one dance you'll do alone

Keep a fire for the human race
Let your prayers go drifting into space
You never know what will be coming down
Perhaps a better world is drawing near
Or just as easily we could all disappear
Along with whatever meaning you might have found
Don't let the uncertainty drag you around
Go out and make a joyful sound

Into a dancer you have grown
From a seed somebody else has thrown
Go on ahead and through some seeds of your own
And somewhere between the time you arrive and the time you go
May lie a reason you were alive, but you'll never know

I didn't know of him until now

I had never heard of him either.
Knew nothing of of him until I saw the title of this thread and wondered who is Chris Cornell?

So I looked at a little bit about him on internet search .

Apparently he had some limited success in the music/entertainment business--lead singer/songwriter with the bands he founded and as a solo singer. He was a grunge band guy in the 1990s--I can't name one grunge band or song so....
He was nominated for a Grammy award several times but never won one.
He had a 3 octave wide vocal range/voice--but he never developed that gift into a finely focused, tuned, and controlled musical instrument/tool.

His suicide should not be a surprise to anyone from what I saw about him--he had serious mental problems as a kid and all throughot his adult life. He never received ant effective medical psychiatric help. He was an alcohol and substance abuse self medicator who went through the "rehab" process and supposedly had been clean at one point in 2011.

"Cornell spent a two-year period between the ages of nine and eleven solidly listening to The Beatles after finding a large collection of Beatles records abandoned in the basement of a neighbor's house. Cornell was a loner; however, he was able to deal with his anxiety around other people through rock music. During his teenage years, Chris spiralled into severe depression, dropped out of school and almost never left the house during his state of depression.
Before becoming a successful musician, he worked at a seafood wholesaler and was a sous-chef at a restaurant named Ray's Boathouse"

Admittedly I have never heard of the man. But however, there is no reason why I can't show my respect. RIP Chris Cornell.
He obviously made an impact on peoples lives and that is all that is important.
Nobody should have to feel like this and want to take their own life. :can:

I never heard The Dancer song before, just listened to it. I've heard a profound but short statement; suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. For some, their depression is anything but temporary.

Wish I could rep you for that statement. So true. Most problems do go away eventually. It is tough to see that at the time. But suicide is in fact permanent and will never leave those you have left behind.

Agree, I get the sentiments some have expressed.
Someone who wrote a song or made a record they liked died and that in turn generates an abstract existential sense of personal loss even though they still have the recording/music/song/words they liked and in spite of the fact they had no personal relationship of any kind whatsoeverwith the deceased in the real world.
The only thing anyone really lost is the possibility of being entertained in the future, either live or with new material, by the deceased.
Is one of the strange symbolic reactions people have to celebrities who die for whatever reason or reasons.

Suicide is a much bigger issue than one minor relativley unknown depressed song writer/pop singer guy killing himself.

In the USA, suicide is the 9th largest cause of death in USA according "Deaths: Leading Causes for 2014"-- From: https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr65/nvsr65_05.pdf

According to this one suicide the 10th largest cause in 2014: "Deaths: Final Data for 2014" here: https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr65/nvsr65_04.pdf

•Number of USA hospital emergency department visits for self-inflicted injury: 383,000

Mortality--self inflicted deaths , USA, 2014.
All suicides
•Number of deaths: 42,773
•Deaths per 100,000 population: 13.4
•Cause of death rank: 10

Firearm suicides
•Number of deaths: 21,334
•Deaths per 100,000 population: 6.7

Suffocation suicides
•Number of deaths: 11,407
•Deaths per 100,000 population: 3.6

There is some unusual humour about suicide that I found while looking for the suicide stats--here a few of them that I found amusing--just to lighten this whole subject up a bit:

"Last week I told my psychiatrist, “I keep thinking about suicide,” and he told me from now on I have to pay in advance."
~ Rodney Dangerfield"

"There have been times when I’ve thought about it –
but with my luck it would probably turn out to be only a temporary solution". ~ Woody Allen

"I have a paper cut from writing my suicide note… it’s a start…" ~ Steven Wright

"A man committed suicide by overdosing on decongestant tablets; all they found was a pile of dust."~ Steve Connelly
