Can you hide behind a proxy?

Years ago for reasons of 'cough' stealth 'cough' I used to connect through 1 or 2 proxy servers, never knew how affective is was back then, but I was wandering how affective it is now.

Can forum admin detect this and is it possible to create numerous accounts with different ip's?


P.S. not looking to cause mischief, just wandering if banned members can still be active here.

you can easily catch someone behind one or two proxies, but if they are using TOR for instance, they is really no way to get them. Not even the police can.

How do you see past the proxies to the next ip address?
