Sorry Ben but I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one.

While I do think that a 2-3 line cap is extreme I think that font size should be limited.
I.E. Like what ultimatehacker does. There is nothing wrong with displaying your Laser collection in your sig.

Well the Sig used by ultimatehacker has absolutely nothing to do with
Lasers... (
irrelevant to this Laser Forum... IMO)...
So for Sigs like that perhaps Laser_Ben has a point..

Advertising all the lasers you have my not be a good idea -- in the future.
I like things short and to the point.

Write what you want to in them. Don't throw in all the obnoxious colors and fonts sizes. Keep the words reasonable.

But pictures... yeesh.

I could go without pictures. Especially animated ones. Not everybody has high speed internet, and leaving those unnecessary pictures out of the sigs will cut down on web page loading times.

I agree with the sig "issue" there are a lot of members sigs who i have adblocked for being huge and annoying. i think a few sigs take up too much space.. meaning the sig is longer than the post.

Maybe some of the members could limit what they put into the sig.... maybe just the best or whatever lasers, and not everything they have evaar collected or owned.

(IMPO)
No offence..

I never thought I'd see the day where a sig was considered a nuisance. Not once have I ever thought about someones signature being annoying.

Avery already has limitations built into the system which limit the length of text, and the size of any images in a signature.

I post a lot of tutorial threads and build threads that are full of a lot of pictures.

Hmmm... probably that is even more annoying than a signature is. (to people who don't like to have a post fill up their screen)

And you should continue to do so :)

They can always not look at it...

My responses are in red.

Good points all..

Pros and cons, and I have to fall in the middle I guess. They don't bother me so much, and I have noticed some rather large and non-relevant samples. Even those that are relevant (large or small) go ignored after I've seen them a few times.

At first, I actually thought it was the culture here to list all your lasers in your sig, then I too thought your profile would be a better place.

In one post made earlier regarding a real computer versus a toy (screen size, load time, etc.), I laughed at first, because as a graphics guy, I don't care whether someone with low resolution has trouble with my website, because those folks are not my intended audience. However, the audience here shouldn't be assumed to have killer PCs. They may have killer lasers and DIY shops, but not killer PCs.

So, the argument here is a valid one. If you want to read a thread for particular content, why would you want to scroll though extra pages to get past unrelated stuff in signatures? Especially if you're on your laptop away from your killer PC, and have to wait for 500k of graphics to load from one guy's signature.

On the other side, I have to agree with the fun part, and again as a graphics guy, resist the temptation to load my sig with stuff like this:

Oh, come on, that's really cool! Oh, alright, I won't..
