Attention all Americans

I'd invite ya'll to Croatia next summer if it weren't for the certain probability that , well you know, country won't exist by then.

In case it survives , anybody visiting me ?

I think that it is important to make a distinction here. Because two very different things always get packed together to skew towards a point of view.

There is a big difference between visiting a country as a tourist and not being able to speak the language and planning on living in a society and not wanting to be a part of that society. IE not learning the language.

Tourists are welcome because they bring money into the local economy's. Some places cannot survive without tourism. Every time I have visited a country that I did not know the language there were many options that help you navigate your way. Hotels typically can arrange for a guides that are fluent with many languages.(again helping the local economy) You could also visit some of the tourist destinations that are designed to be foreign friendly.

I was in Croatia around 7 years ago when one of your country men won the Wimbledon.(or at least I think is was the Wimbledon, not a big tennis watcher) Craziest party I have ever seen. The streets run a muck. You guys know how to throw a party.

And there are some great tourist destinations as well. That castle built on the shores of the Ocean was sweet.(Assuming there are not 500 of them and you know which one I am talking about)

i disagree. i think americans make the best tourists.... we tip well, and are courteous when abroad.... but i think americans have the worst tolerance for touristis in our country.

i've been all over europe and have been treated with nothing but open arms. the only place i have been that doesnt really like americans is Spain.

I have spent a few years in Europe, and have seen some very bad examples of American behavior.

The worst behavior was not in tourists mecca's. It's off the beaten path where Americans come off as arrogant, and expect to be treated as if they where in an area that caters to tourists.

The party thing, almost exactly the problem.

Croatia is currently around 17.5 billion (or 17.5 milliard on large scale) of HRK, or 3.5 million $US in international dept.

Too much party, too few thinking I'd say.

People are pissed, our so-called "leaders" find out dept a "success" (I'm serious, prime minister actually stated that), and that they see the exit only in new depts.

While the govt cut every single paycheck in country to minimum and reduced pesnions below-enough-to-survive , they still like to rauise their paycheck which are regularely $4000 a month, highest in Croatia. (My mum's paycheck is $600 a month... for size refference)

Ofcourse, they do not think of cutting their own pays.


Tourism is dying too...


Instead of going totally off topic, I'll be stopping here and plot my Great Escape from this hell-hole in 5 years after I finish college.

Having lived all over the US, I think that the general consensus is that the worst tourists in this country are us texans and, apparently, upper class russians. When I lived in idaho in a ski resort town, it was well known that the russian visitors we got were not always very good tourists. I was at the mountain one time and this convoy of russian families drove right up to the mountain on a road that was clearly marked BUS/AMBULANCE ONLY (another reason to speak the local language) and drove their cars on to the snow. They didn't seem to notice all the stares or the fact that every single other person was walking from the parking area :crackup: That sort of thing was actually fairly common.

Will: The French can make some pretty bad tourists. I don't speak much French, but understand enough to get the gist of a comment. I've overheard some French tourists berating natives in other countries, and sometimes the natives understand enough to know whats being said. It's really shocking what people will do in a foreign country. I aways think of Myself as an Ambassador representing the USA, and conduct Myself appropriately.

Its hilarious, thats what 2 year old americans say cause they are not yet good enough to say Mom, or Dad. They even spell it "Mum" :crackup:

One thing that I don't understand is the British don't even know their own alphabet.
They think the 8th letter is "Haych", and the last letter is "Zed" :crackup:
