additionally I have never heard anyone pronounce the "L" in solder when speaking English... however speaking in Spanish you do pronounce the L in "soldar"

I guess the Chinese would have trouble pronouncing it....
(Fried Rice = Flied Lice)... they seem to like the "L"...

I'm in the UK , and how right are you about the chinese.
When i'm ordering i allways say "Fly lice" and they never get onto it haha.

Anyhow, I live in the south and have always pronounced it with the L. I assume I picked that up from others doing it as well but who knows, I am a bet of a pronunciation rebel. I think it should be pronounced how its spelled, dont care what language it came from, I'm not speaking that one. Pisses my wife off everytime I pronounce genre. If they wanted it to be pronounced jjohn-rah, they shoulda spelled it like that.

Hey english is all about them silent letters and combined letters making sounds a simple other letter coulda made. tele-fone, no. Genre is just too much though, pronouncing it the "real" way is more like emulating an accent.

It's the people saying "soL-der" that are saying it wrong. The L is silent.. have a close look at that definition that dnar posted.. the correct English pronunciation is right there.

Yeah I know... I'm French so I always cringe when I hear the "jjohn-rah" prunonciation, the real way to pronounce it in French sounds closer to JAR, with a slight nasal inflection* to the A . The French syllabe "EN" has no equivalent in the English language, so it is understandeable that English-speaking people have a bit of difficulty to pronounce it because they do not have a tonal reference.
