Well, saying that dumpsters can be a gold mine, sometimes ..... i was looking hoping to found some decent copper block, two hours ago, on our local dumpster, and i've seen an aluminium tube with a terminal come out from under the snow ..... i pulled it, and it come out showing to be a complete Manfrotto tripod, mod 28, with a mod 229 head hooked on it ..... so, i put an indifferent expression on my face (tried, at least :p), gone to the guy that hold the dumpster and asked him if i can take "these aluminium tubes" for an experiment, and he said, ok, but is aluminium and cost, so i have to ask you at least 10 Euro ..... i ensure you that it was really really hard, to not show what i was thinking on my face, paying him the 10 Euro .....

That tripod/head combination was sold around 500 / 550 Euro, the last time i checked ..... LOL !!

It's a bit dirt, and all wet and iced, but appears almost intact, just a start of oxidation signs and two scratches on the black paint of the head holder (but not on the metal), probably due to the fact that it was there for a week or more ..... but all the tubes are straight, all the holders are good, the head works almost perfectly (need to clean and lubricate all the movements, but also in these conditions it's moving smooth and with no steps) ..... so i suppose i can clean and reassemble it almost as new .....

Well, i never had enough money for buy one of them, but perhaps that this christmas, i already got a gift, at least :p :D

Awesome find! I've gotta do some dumpster diving myself, as I need some scrap metal for a project I'm working on.

Manfrotto site is javascript based with images on an external place, and don't let me link any pictures ..... sorry

EDIT: found a pic similar, the difference is that mine is silver (aluminium) color, not black finished like this one, but the model is the same

LOL !

I'm on dumpster at least one time each week (for carry exhausted ink and toner cartridges and broken PC parts to special containers) ..... and, sometimes, i find something interesting like this one (but usually, nothing ..... i found interesting things, like 5 or 6 times, in all this year, just for give you an idea)

Yes, sometimes you can find something really nice, like this time, but is still rare (also cause i think that 99% of the times that someone throw away something good, the dumpster guys take them for first :p)

The head alone goes for $225 U.S.

As usual, we are always more advanced than US, with prices ..... :na:

..... that what i mean is that here in Italy, the head it's 239 Euro, like, 350 $ ..... we always are more advanced, in the sense that we always pay more, for the same things ..... :cryyy: :wtf:

That'd come REALLY handy when I'm taking pics with the D90.

I've got a 13 dollar tripod (1,21m tall, nice find :p).

Guess I'll just have to go dig in some dumpsters!!

One Q, why did you ask him if you could take it? Isn't garbage "free to take"?

Heh, not in all the places, and also here in Italy all the places have different local laws ..... in the most parts and big cities, as example, for carry scraps in a dumpster, you have to be registered as resident, and own a card where they register your actions (and pay for it), and usually you cannot carry away anything from a dumpster, no matter what is, the rules say no .....

Here, i'm in a small town, the dumpster is managed from a "no-profit" organization of retired volunteers, and get no money from the administration, so they separate different elements, metals, plastics, special waste (electronics and toners and so on must be separated and managed from specific companies), and when peoples carry in tv and electronics that are not mangled, they check for working ones and take them apart ..... and get some money selling metals as recycle process ..... also, peoples can carry anything in the dumpster without have to own a card and pay for it, and if they want, left an offer, or ask for carry away things that they need, if still good, for very little prices .....

@ Raybo: exactly that, the only difference is the color :)

Great find, HIML9, my generic tripod is giving me all sorts of headaches, been on the hunt for a nice (expensive :yabbmad:) one myself. Guess I should start dumpster diving, eh?

On a side note, which camera you shoot with? I am a Canon man myself.

Mainly Nikon ..... i have an F601 and an F90, plus a decent set of optics collected in the last 15 years (18/135, 16F2.8, 50F1.4, 105F2, 200F2 and an old catadrioptic 800 manual) ..... as digital, i have only a Camedia 2000Z at the moment (waiting for a spare lens), and saving for get something better ..... the wish and hope is to find a decent D90, or something at the same level, at least (don't know why, but i tried more "modern" models from Nikon and i don't like them, especially the last one ..... too much "automatic", for my photographic abitudes) ..... but for now, the wallet is at diet :p, so, waiting and hoping .....
