Even more amazing is that when the meteorite broke up explosively high above the ground (+20Km alt), it did so with the power of several Kt and temporarily knocked out all radio and cell within a very wide area.
It was estimated that this meteor came in at a higher than normal velocity. Nearly 8.3Km/sec or 30,000Km/hr.
There is a theory that it came in with such force that the difference in temperature also somehow managed to cause a gigantic magnetic disturbance. (Piezoelectric effect?)
Many reports of people loosing their cell phone connection and people experiencing radio-silence while this object passed overhead. Really weird!!
Someone needs to explain that to me. I guess sometimes Science can be stranger than SCFI.
The resulting shock wave was felt over a 100Km radius. Also the explosion was big enough to be clearly seen from orbit via satellite.
The videos on Youtube are unreal.
Can you imagine a larger meteorite detonating at a lower altitude? The result would be just as devastating as an above ground nuclear bomb.
We've got to pay attention to what's orbiting us, or heading our way. Friday was a wake-up call. Next time it could be a much bigger problem.

Well, they're probably the first people in recorded history to be injured by an exploding meteorite :thinking:

Good thing just injuries. It could have been much worse. :can:

A manuscript published at Tortona, Italy, in 1677 tells of a Milanese friar who was killed by a meteorite.[3] In 1992 a very small fragment (3 g) of Mbale meteorite hit a young Ugandan boy,[4] but it had been slowed down by a tree and did not cause any injury. In 2009 Gerrit Blank, a 14-year-old boy in Essen, Germany, claimed to have been hit by a meteorite, but it is unclear whether that was an actual metorite strike.

Meteorites in ascending value in the market:

Unobserved find = price depends on rarity
Observed fall = price becomes out of reach for average hobbyist
Observed and hit an inanimate object = Cha Ching!
Hit a human (especially with observable injury) = BAZINGA!
