Hey guys,
i can get a Coherent Purlight STAR C Argon/Krypton Laser producing 4.2 watts all lines. AKA "white light" laser, requires 3 Phase and Water Cooling.

my friend wants $1500 for this

And also 1 Liconix 3.1 Watt 488 nm and 512 nm ARGON laser. Come with external self contained water cooling system
Any suggestions would be much appreciated =)

If you can afford it, go for it. I'm not an expert at gas lasers, but perhaps Daguin or any other LPF member with lots of gas laser experience can help you out :beer:

I plan to get both=) $2500 for the 488/512 and $1500 for the 4 watt....

I have 3 phase in my shop.=) so that wont be an issue..

My friend says these are around $20k new. Is this pricing accurate?

If so then Im thinking i should definitely jump on these=)

Any suggestions? I am not too familiar with gas lasers myself.

Yeah 20k sounds about right for a single fresh 4W white light ArKr. Only the big boys (companies) can buy 'em direct so manufacturers charge an arm and a leg.

DO NOT APPLY -ANY- POWER UNTIL YOU HAVE THE WATER COOLING RUNNING. NO EXCEPTIONS. EVER. Make sure you are meeting the minimum flow rate as well.

Personally I would pass on the 488/514 at that price tag if given the opportunity to get the ArKr, though a self contained external heat exchanger is worth $1k if it can move enough heat to keep these lasers happy.

yup, grab it right away. I'd kill for a deal like that - just doesn't happen in Aus.

Couple things you should consider before forking over that kind of cash. First is the number of hours on the tube. If it has over 4 or 5K hours I would probably pass. Second thing, a lot of the Coherents have "ampules" on the ballast tank. The ampules generally have either argon or krypton in them and there should be around 5 ampules. As the argon or krypton gas is depleted you can snap one of the ampules to extend the life of the laser. If all or most of the ampules are already snapped, I'd pass. If all the ampules are snapped then it will be close to needing a refurb, which will cost thousands.

Thanks for the great advise=)
the 3.1w 488/512 has 120 hours on it and all 5 ampules. $2500 for this one
the 4 watt has 3 ampules left and unknown hours and $1500 for this one

what do you think DJZ?

I have the money for both, but am unsure if they are worth their asking price.

With three ampoules left that 4W is still worth it, consider it less than half used up so to speak. It's not like you'll be running it for hours every day so it should last you essentially forever.

The 488/514 is basically brand new, keep that in mind.

If I had constant access to 3phase power I'd probably offer a grand for it. We use a similar laser at SELEM, Coherent Star that isn't polarized and it puts out just over 6W. The color from these along with a PCAOM is amazing. In my office, I had a little air cooled white light that I used for a while before it developed a problem. I got rid of it and picked up an air cooled argon and just added a red diode after the PCAOM and it looks fantastic.
