Trying to keep up with political correctness in language is like a puppy chasing its own tail.

The harder one tries to find the "right label", the faster that right label becomes the new insult.

EVERYONE labels others but dislikes being labeled themselves. Thusly as one label becomes offensive, a new label is born. Once the new label is in use, people begin to be offended by it.

And the wheels on the bus go round and round

The terms noob and newb have been around for years on the internet, and the difference in the meanings and level of acceptance is not going to change. One describes someone as new, the other as immature. "Noob" is a very condescending term. It's been like this since the early eighties.

It's an easy change in terminology that's worth doing so as to not run people off that are from my generation.

Is it not worth it to type a different four letters? It takes the exact same amount of effort.

This is NOT true. Sorry. Language is constantly in flux. Originally NooB was NOT condescending nor denoted immaturity. Inexperience?, yes Immaturity? no. Those are not the same thing. It was simply a shorthand. It has been around since the Arpanet in the late 60's (although it wasn't completely shortenend to the four letter form then). It came out of the jungles of Vietnam as the soldiers returned and began attending college. It has already changed significantly since then and it will change more as time goes on.

Words have no meaning. Meaning resides in people. As people change, so does the meaning assigned to words.

Maybe I have not been clear enough. It is not my job to avoid offending or turning off your generation. The world does not adapt to you. You adapt to the world. Will it change? Absolutely. Will it change to make your life easier or to keep from offending you, only if you are lucky.

The term newbie entered usage on the internet in the eighties through newsgroups, and evolved from there.

Am I trying to make you adapt? No.

Here's an extreme example for you - the term 'negro' was in colloquial use to describe a person of African descent in times past, but now when someone from that generation uses that descriptor, people are offended - because it ended up as a term of condescension. Is this the Black community being unwilling to adapt?

And if you're not interested in trying to cultivate new members of my generation, who are educated in internet culture and terminology, then it is not my job to convince you otherwise. Though I would expect something better from a pillar in the community.

But the fact remains the same - 'noob' is derogatory. The choice lies with you what to do with that fact.

I use Noob all the time referring to New Members here on the Forum...
It is not meant to be hurtful or mean spirited or offending...

If it offends someone then the problem lies elsewhere... and perhaps
shouldn't be read and interpreted as offensive... when clearly it was
never intended to be offensive...

I even referred to my self as a noob... How bad can it be...

Fair enough. All I'm trying to say is, that no matter your intent, sometimes it's interpreted in a negative way. It takes the same number of keystrokes to say "newb."

If it offends someone then the problem lies elsewhere... and perhaps
