Dammit I'm pissed. I receive the package today, manage to solder up the power supply and extract the diode without any damage. With that done, I have a nice Blu Ray diode that lights up beautifully. Then I adjust something and the damned violet laser pin pops off! After this, I try repairing the damage, but to no avail.

I knew something like this would happen. Time to buy two of these things for next time just in case

I've had that happen to a few, too. Oddly enough, I've been able to repair them with extremely careful work, even if the pin breaks off all the way at the bottom. Don't just toss it out. If you have a steady hand, a good magnifier, a diamond wheel dremel, and small drill bits, it's worth a try to repair.

DrLAva --

That looks like an old Elly flashlight -- Did you get it up to ~5 volts with a cap across the input ??

That's exactly right. the cap helps bypass the battery's internal resistance during the inductor pump stage.

Unfortunately, I managed to ESD the thing while attempting a repair (I even got it to light up again too). The plan was to semi-solder it to the pin and then hot-glue the wire to hold it in place.

Next time I'll put a nice blob of hot glue on the back after the pins are all soldered for reinforcement.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

BB, it might help if you grab some thin wires rather than the thicker ones... they allow for more twisting and wiggling without hurting the diode.

Another idea is to use pins from LEDs or 1/4 Watt resistors and solder them to the tiny pins, and then solder the wires to the back of these (soldering the pin to the wore first works as well, and would help lessen the amount of heat applied to the diode). These thin wires are sturdy enough to stay in place, but are also flexible enough to not hurt the diode if the wire should tug on the diode's pins :p

I use 26 AWG stranded wire for connections. 28 or 30 AWG will also work if you can find it. I got my 26 from Ratshack years ago - hope they still have it.
You could use the wire they provide in their clip leads - real flexable.

Hey Dr. Lava. I have a BR hooked up to an Elly that I got from DX. I noticed that you also have done the same thing. Mine is lasing without any modification to the elly whatsoever. Do you think that putting a cap across the input might increase the voltage too much? Also did yours lase post modification?.

Re:  Violet laser modules $27 ***CLOSED***

My mod was for an older version elly that puts out regulated 5V, and yes it lases after the modification. Started out at 10mW, now it's putting out about 14mW.

The newer version elly apparently doesn't have an external transistor, and can out put as much as 7V. do you know which version you used?
