so with the focusing one, is the focusing thingy on the diode or on the ouside? Pics? and since it has 2W diode, its more mW output right?

Hello Dr-L,

Got it, *[smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Ordered One 2W Silver. If you don't see the paymnent and see this post, please post and let me know. *

ALSO< Could you Post what you believe is the Current Time Frame as you see it now? Just Curious now that the Pressure is Off. *;D

Go figure, After I called and B!t*#d out my Card Company Last Night at 11pm for over an hour for losing my Payment, AGAIN, Low and behold, it was posted first thing after Midnight. Those Jerks had it all along, I knew it! *[smiley=angry.gif]

So after a LARGE amount of undo stress, a few broken items in the home, (I was quite upset last night-wonder what that will cost to fix everything?) and one P-O'd Wife, a Drained Bank Account, and a Maxed Out Card just before Christmas, I Got It! *

Aren't Lasers Just Grand! Merry Christmas to ME! *[smiley=bath.gif]

Regards,
Joe

They offer the deal until the 4th, but this is too long to wait from now. Also, I will limit it to 20 units, because that is already a lot of money, when you add it all up, the risk would just be too much if we got up to $10,000 in this. All said, I will be back from a visit with my in-laws on the 26th, and probably close it up around then.

Also, more details about the warranty!:

For a period of 1 month after purchase, if there is a failure or if it doesn't work properly, S-KY will repace it and pay all shipping charges. After that, for 6 months, they will pay shipping charges one way for repair/replacement.

Photos descriptions or measurements of the problem are required to initiate an RMA.

Oh noooooooo, 2W diode will be hard to resist.... The reason I'm still a bit hesitant is because I currently have NovaLaser 105mW with a peak of around 130mW. This laser is "only" double the performance, with a downside of larger form factor (minimum triple the overall volume). With this kind of size, I expect much more powerful laser than just 220mW (270 peak). In my mind, laser this "big" should be able to output around 300mW average with 350 peak.

For 2W diode, if you tweak the board and increase the current, what is the output achievable? It is easy to do it ourself? I don't mind shorter diode life (5000 hours compared to 8000 hours) and shorter duty cycle or shorter continuous operating minutes with a brighter laser as a trade off...

If you're really into tweaking, I think a large performance increase could be achieved by making the diode mount out of copper instead of AL, and it would even be possible to put a small constant-current TEC in there by cleaving the diode mount and inserting it before the threads. At minimum, application of heatsink grease should give a small benefit over time.

DrLava --

Interesting idea here. Somewhere I think I saw that it may be crystal heating which lowers output power as the pump is not overdriven. Would the TEC cool the crystals too ?? Lots of thoughts on this.... let us ponder until they arrive.

Mike
I'm not sure if cooling the crystals would help. My impression was that the crystals would need to heat up to their optimal temperature to function best. So if they are too cold they won't work well. I also recall lab DPSS greens to have separate KTP and ND:YVO4 crystals as they would need to operate at different temperatures for optimal performance.

But I think you may be right in that the lowered output might be caused by the crystals overheating. Just that TEC cooling might be hard to control here.

Perhaps someone more knowledgeable would like to tell us more about this.

*edit* Here is what Sam's guide says:
Depending on sophistication, the pump laser diode may be mounted directly on the lasing crystal or have its beam passed through correction and collimating optics first. Thermo Electric (TE) devices may be used to regulate the temperature of the pump diode for general cooling and to temperature tune its wavelength to the optimum for the absorption band of the Nd in the lasing crystal (around 808 nm). Temperature control of the vanadate to keep it cool and happy) and KTP to keep it warm and happy to further optimize output power may also be desirable. If you are determined to generate more than a few mW of green light, all of these will be needed.

Good point. I believe the crystals are separated in this laser so cooling would be a problem in these stages. I'll have to look for a piece of copper.

Yeah, it would be hard to control, I'd say just hook a current limiting resistor on the TEC and let the thermal equations and nonlinear optical changes solve themselves. If you're above or below the optimal equilibrium, adjust limiting resistor accordingly anything more probably wouldn't be worth it, as it would require complete disassembly/disalignment of the optic stack.
