BTW, this is what it is:

http://www.grassrootscomputers.com/...u-Ray_Reader/BDC-2202/partinfo-id-349070.html

But... It IS a 5x BR, after all ;)

I agree on the 12x only being announced..

But why do you say it's 5x Pioneer?
Because it is the only thing on google having to do with "12x Blu-Ray Writer" ;D
BUT... I read AMKs thread, and these actually MIGHT BE GENUINE 12x SLEDS!!! :D

Dave, link....
I can't find it.... But thinking about it you are probably right...
But even a 4x diode from another manufacturer could be better than the other 4x. Not that that one is bad, but every diode will be different.
EDIT: Oh, it was a theory... Ok, i feel better now.

I looked again.  I may have mistaken the "Sanyo" brand, but not the reality.  I can find DVD burners, with the 4X BD / 12X DVD combination from Sony, Liteon, and LG.  We know that Sanyo like to make and use its own sleds and lasers, but Sony, Liteon, and LG all use other maker's tech and components.

Peace,
dave

Possibly, yes. I'll ask...
Daguin, will you test the other sled in high resolution? :)

It would be my honor ;)

I've never intentionally tortured a diode that was paid for by somebody else before.  ;D

I do hope you realize that torturing a diode is not the same as testing it? :p

You need to start from the beginning this time. Don't start at 200mA! The most important factor is the position of the first kink... That will immediatelly tell us what it compares to, or what it is better than.

Resolution is also important so as not to skip the kink. Try to make small steps. <5mA, 2-3mA would be better..

[smiley=thumbsup.gif]

The torturing doesn't start until well past the "expected" currents.  ;)

This one will be tested for a different purpose than the last one.  The last one I killed was just sacrificed to find a quick upper limit for the "new" diode.

Peace,
dave

P.S. You say "toemaytoe and I say "toemahtoe" :p

Well, we have gotten overly excited about "6x's" too...

Amk says they come from Sanyo, and that the supplier told him they are 450xx, but couldn't remember what xx stands for.

However, i do hope that this is not info the supplier picked from the web, like us! Cos then it could be the same kind of confusion as with the "6x's", where the supplier decided they are "the same as 6x" based on a picture sent by a customer! (i researched this, and they told me and showed the pictures)

But preciselly because the 4x sled LOOKS the same as a 6x sled, it CAN'T be the same!

There are two ways to make a faster writer:
#1: Same sled higher power diode
#2: Same diode better sled with less lossy optics

So since it's the same sled, the diode can not be.

And yet suppliers make stuff up.

But even if this is a 5x, it could be:
#1: Same diode as 6x, but lossier optics
#2: Same diode as 4x, but better optics
#3: New diode..

Re: 12x sled Feeler !!!!! $40.00

$40 is better than amkdeath's $55 by any means, but I'll wait until the tests are in before making a decision.

I don't think you can find the upper limit by pushing it till it dies. You can find the current where it dies in seconds, but that's all. These are not like reds, and while they are laser diodes, they come from a different planet.. ;)

A red would never allow you to push it so far above what it can actually survive for any appreciable time... 405nm's don't have knees, but they have kinks. Under the first kink they live for thousands of hours, just above it it is hundreds, dropping as it approaches the second kink, slightly higher it is tens of hours, and above the third kink it is tens of minutes if you're lucky...

These diodes do for the first time ever allow us to push them to powers of a non existing future generation diode. This was impossible with reds, otherwise we could push an open can to 600mW. But with reds, the knee stops you...

Did you find a limit where 4x's can live?

Yeah.  I stopped at about 330mA.  Above 270mA the output would climb as long as I had power to it.  Then I took it back down to the last current where the output was stable (270mA).  It died shortly.

I built a hand held with the flexdrive set at 210mA.  However, this is the one that the output drops as the batteries fade.  I have replaced the batteries but it still fades.  Since I have no idea what the output is at any time without testing it every time, I can't say much about this one.  It is still putting out 180mW when it has new batteries in it.  I haven't set up another test yet.  I need more diodes ;)

Peace,
dave

Re: 12x sled Feeler !!!!! $40.00

I will indeed by plotting this.  I was also entertaining the idea of sending it to lava to have him plot it as his setup is better than mine.
Regardless of which way this goes, I will still test the diode and see if it's at least possible to get 150-200mw from this diode.

BTW, if these are trully 12x's, i sure hope no one is gonna stick them into DX modules! If you do, you might regret it later....

Great! Three plots are better than one!

We should all try to focus on finding the kinks, mostly the first one.... :)

Re: 12x sled Feeler !!!!! $40.00

If they do turn out to be stronger than the 4x/6x diodes, count me in for 1 as well.

300+ mw of Blu? I would probably drool & short out something [smiley=shocked.gif]

Re: 12x sled Feeler !!!!! $40.00 shipped

Re: 12x sled Feeler !!!!! $40.00 shipped

So, by expressing interest above does that mean you've reserved yours, or is it first come first served to the payment page?

I know I want one, though in order to do an instant payment I'll need to borrow my coworkers credit card... The earliest that can happen is Monday morning. With the amount of interest already expressed in one day I fear these'll all be gone by then.
