well, true to my word, I've fiddled with a washer and modified it to fit the ID perfectly, then see if the retaining ring will hold it in place. I am happy to announce that it was 100% successful. I have pictures of the mod. So it looks like pontiac is going to have to make up these "washers" since they have to be pretty thin.

I don't have my digital calipers so I can't measure it right now, but it WAS a fiber washer that I spun on a dremel and reduced it's overall diameter to fit the ID of the tailcap. i will find the dimensions soon.

I did try other retaining rings, both a 18mm and a 3/4" didn't work any better.

Agreed, it is nice to know what is going on and what is being done about it. It is so nice to not be in the dark about these things. :)

I need a heads up for those that want their barrels unfinished. Just send me a simple PM letting me know you want your barrels right away.

As someone else indicated, the walnut shell media I was using did not get rid of all the machine marks around the diameter, I've tried multiple days to see if I could get rid of it and had no success. Finally I determined I needed a more course media and started the process of finding some media that would work. Well, sadly, every place I went, had a minimum order of 50lbs of media and I can guarantee you that in my polisher, I needed far less than 50lbs. So, I scoured the internet for MONTHS trying to find a source for media with a smaller minimum order. I finally last week found a source and ordered 10lbs of plastic cones and they arrived today. I am happy to announce that after just a few minutes, I could already see the machine marks starting to disappear. I will let it run for a few hours and see what the results are and report back.

In the meantime, I did up a very short video of the polishing process. * WARNING* it's incredibly loud.

Definitely appreciate all the information flowing about the continued status of the hosts. It does mean a lot that we are kept in the loop as to what is going on. :thanks:

Kenom... Out of the 11 hosts I am getting I have 2 hosts getting marble black/red, 2 hosts getting marble black/blue, and 2 hosts getting marble black/purple. Any chance I could get 3 of them with a matte finish so that I have one set of the 3 colors matte/marble and another set the regular polished/marble way?

sure. I don't know how it will look, so can't be responsible for the results... I will do what you want tho.

OK, I've run this barrel since 3pm. The stop time was 8pm. so were looking at 5 hours in the polisher. Still not enough time in my estimation, but you can see what the results are.

it's big on purpose so you can see the detail.

the top one is a good polish on a buffing wheel.
second one is with walnut shells alone
third is the new cone media.

As you can see on the middle one, there are still visible machine marks going around the diameter. With the cones, it completely removed the tool marks.

I would rather not be a guinea pig with the matte finish so I'll take them the original way. :)

well, i have finally fiqured out why these switches I've been using for these Krytons are such a PIle of CRAP~

Pile%20of%20crap%20switches.jpg

#1 is a switch that has had it's internal spring heated up as a result of too much current passing through it. Believe it or not, this was only 1.3A
#2 is what it is supposed to look like. As you can see, the spring is really really small. it's no wonder they die so easily.

those are from dx right? maybe you should ask Ehgemus where he gets his clicky switches ( they are the best! ), perhaps they have some that fit the krytons.
if they would cost more im more then happy to pay additional for it.

I'm pretty sure those switches will handle plenty of current Ken...

But if that little spring got hot enough to take the temper out of it, then you had a short somewhere...

You might be waiting a very long time unless you plan to do it yourself. I don't think Kenom has that as a choice otherwise I would have certainly wanted something similar.

I can do a chemical beadblast... essentially it's the same as beadblasting. Making a matte surface. Same thing with the finish after these cones.

Here is a host that I did the chemical dip to. you can see the "look" best on the lip of the tip of the flashlight.

Coherentlight provided me with an image that better conveys the look after being removed from the chemical dip

I agree with Jayrob. I have run these at slightly above 1A for minutes at a time. However, today, I had one spring retaining ring slip up and allow the spring to contact the top of the battery and the side of the barrel. I broke four switches before I figured it out. Although, the fourth was a conscious test of my theory ;)

This was with a microboost driver. I have not tried this with one of jib77's LM1117 based 1.3A drivers. If there was no short, then maybe we have found the limit of these switches

In any event, make sure that the battery contact spring is completely insulated or is held centered mechanically to avoid this short

Peace,
dave
