Which is why Kenom's have the threading issues....notice my above post. Kenom explained to me that the heat from polishing distorted the threading, which is why he ordered a tap for them to straighten them out. So,
Kenom's Polished barrels=Threading issues from the heat needed
Pontiacq5's Unpolished barrels=no issues/no heat

I don't know crap about machining metals but for people in the know I would figure this would have been considered. Hopefully the tap didn't set Ken back to much just to get things right.

Heat from polishing distorting threads? Seriously?

You would have to get the thing close if not over the melting point of aluminum for anything permanent to happen to the threads. If they were to get hot they would expand but when they cooled down they would go right back to normal.

I also find it interesting that heating the threads up is what's supposedly causing the problems now, before it was the small burr on the first thread, the one that is smaller than all the rest.

I had to guess at the specs on the threads because Ken didn't know what they were. All I had to go by was an old groove and half of a model of a Kryton head. All of the parts I made interchanged with the parts on the old groove.

"Things like this" were considered, as I explained above.

Anyone find it interesting that Ken can get on laserchat (he has to be using some sort of IRC client to do that) yet he can't come and post in here?

Hell, you can walk to a McDonald's and get on the wifi there for free. He even posted on the forum asking for money 100+ miles from home but he can't post a status check now? There is no reason for anyone to not be able to post a reply when there is as much money riding on this thing as there is. You can get on the internet almost anywhere nowadays.

Anyone else find it interesting that Ken got angry when I "changed the model?"

First off, I designed the focus adaptor. Ken never sent me a model of a focus adaptor, he just told me to make it work. I made a set and I was not happy with them so I made another set. Ken then got mad at me for "changing the model" because he was a "truist." Then demanded that I give him free parts because he was a "truist" which I refused to do, so he calls me a bad machinist.

There never was an original Groove focus adapter, just like there never was a word "truist." I made the heads based on the model of the head that Ken sent me. (the one model I didn't have to do myself.) I made the heads EXACTLY as the design showed, I'll post some more convincing data if my word is not good enough.

In my opinion Ken is slacking off and blaming me for the delay, either that or he's mad that I'm not giving him free parts. There is no reason all 100 of those barrels should not be polished and anodized by now, I halfway polished all 100 of them in around 45 minutes just to make Ken's half a tiny bit easier. If I spent another 4 hours I could have had them all like diamonds.

In anodizing heat is the enemy, this "I need a place to do it" thing is a poorly made up LIE. If you don't believe me google "anodizing at home" or something similar. The entire process should only take around 1-2 hours per batch, and a batch could be as big as you wanted.

I wasn't going to say anything at first, because I wanted to remain somewhat professional but this has gone too far now. The Bulls*it in this thread is beyond the point I can handle now. I worked for nothing to get these things as cheap as possible for everyone and this is the thanks I get.

Oh, but lets all hope Ken isn't extremely put off for having to buy an unnecessary $6 tap.

Sorry for the unjust crap headed in your direction Pontiac, no matter what he is 'unhappy' with, you still have done a better job and faster than whoever he had do his last run (last year I paid in April and didn't have barrels until October). Like I said I don't know crap about machining (assuming most here don't) and thought tap he was getting was expensive and needed used to fix the burrs on the threads. I did not know that it was unnecessary and cheap to boot. Sorry for seeming overtly negative when not intended.

It is unfortunate that you didn't/aren't being compensated for your hard work to make this happen, I hope that you at least got to make extra Grooves for yourself as compensation.

I sincerely appreciate all of the work that you have done to make this happen and I don't mean to sound critical I am just concerned and hope things get worked out and Ken isn't being a jerk without justification.

I'm as patient as most but I would like a definite date for despatch please. I have purchased on behalf of others for whom I'm building and there are other costs involved here for construction/parts, etc, and questions will no doubt be asked as I am effectively the supplier...

Please find a way to post in this thread Kenom, (not by proxy), and let us know exactly what is happening.

If it's an issue with polishing then I'd rather take on that job myself and get my customers the lasers that they have ordered, (and paid for).

I look forward to a post very soon.

Your barrow is so "hecka" shiny that it produces 120 watts of energy?

Good job.

hmmm....so is that 1W from a diode, and 119watts from the sun reflecting off your chrome barrel? If so, what magnifying glass r u using and where can I get one?! :p

Just talked to Kenom again. He can get on the internet via his local Library for 30 minutes a day. He went today but it was too crowded. He said however that he will try again tomorrow and hopefully he can get on and give yall a real, unproxied update. :)

Peace,
Isaac

My local library is the same way... there's like a 30 minute limit and it's always full of bums.

If I didnt have a computer I know 20+ people within walking distance of me that would let me use one for an hour. If he has a car I find it unfathomable that he cannot access a computer on any day of the week with little effort.

Im not on the list for a kryton (although I almost signed up for one) but it seems like an endless list of excuses. With this kind responsibility and number of people waiting on a product I find it hard to believe that a bit of a wait at the library was the deciding factor on cancelling an update...

I also used to work in a metal shop and find it hard to believe that polishing caused the threads to need to be re-cut...

Now you got me worried. I hope nothings going on?
I would assume if ken was in some kind of trouble like coming up short on supplies for the anodizing that he would just let us know.

Look! I have waited well over a year to get a kryton, a few more weeks or even months wont mean that much to me. As long as I eventually get it.

KENOME Please update us and please try and do so on a weekly basis.

1. You said you have all the supplies for doing the anodizing is this still the case?

2. Have you found a place to do the anodizing??

3. In your opinion, how bad is the messed up threading situation? are they fixable? Should someone else take a look at them? can you fix them?

4. Do we need to take up a small group collection to keep things moving. I would invest $10 more then loose my initial investment.

I did some research of my own and from the looks of it the reason the threads warped is that he is polishing them too quickly, and as such the polishing wheel polishing the Grooves generates more heat causing the threads to warp. He said he only polished a few, and I am almost thinking I might just ask him to send me mine unpolished....haven't decided yet.

solution... don't polish the threads. Assemble the grooves then polish the exterior. Polishing the tread area is pointless because it's not visible when the barrel is assembled.

hitting the threads lightly with a scotchbrite wheel should be all that's needed to deburr them.
