Hey Kenom,
I was looking at a few of your old kryton Groove topics which showed the head/heat sink as well as a few assembly tutorials.
How would you recommend pressing in the diode into the heat sink if i dont have one of those presses?

This is one of those things that if you cannot find a press or purchase a vice like the one I've got in my tutorial, then you might want to rethink this hobby.
As with all hobbies, you have to put forth some money and effort to attain the tools necessary for the hobby. Soldering iron, pliers, vice. You can't operate a radio controlled car without a remote. My vice cost me $15 at harbor freight. The press tool cost me $.50 at a local ace hardware.

I bet his vice is one of the small table top mount type. I have 3 of these things 1 small and 2 larger ones and I have to admit that I use the small one more than twice as much as the larger ones combined (mostly because the small one's in my room). What I need to get is a diode press because the small piece of brass tubing I have isn't cutting it.

Went to harbor freight today and picked up an Arbor press. thing normally costs 30$ i was lugky enough to find its on sale for $18 not bad at all.. also a 7 in 1 volt meter for $2 and i picked up a bunch of drill spacers which fit around the pins of the diode perfectly to use when mounting the diode for another $1.

Heck yeah! ok so i pressed in a dead diode as recomended to size the housing and what not.. now.. How do i get it out.. im assuming since its a dead module i can jsut drill it out or is there a better safer way to do this?

I use a piece of antena (from on old broken portable radio). Works like a charm!!

you do not wanna drill it. If you do, you will deform it and make it so the diode no longer fits.
if nothign else hammer it out with a nail..

HEy kenom, Another quick question... I noticed you had some Artic Silver 5 Thermal paste on your bench when you pressed the diode into place.. Would you recommend using some kind of thermal paste or adhesive? and is it at all necessary? i plan on pushing one of the A140's up to about 1W using the kryton;s heat sink.. think coolikng will be enough?

is thermal paste necessary? No. Is it helpful? Absolutely. As to the effectiveness of the Kryton at 1W, I'll be able to tell you a little later this week. My build will be finished soon. I do know that at 600mw, it gets warm pretty quickly. Not hot, just warm.

Alright thanks.. Ive searched the forums a bit but couldn't find much on the thermal paste. Im sure it takes a bit more finesse than applying it to a CPU so How would you recommend applying it and where would you apply it to the diode?
