Re: GB LIVE & OPEN for Small RF 5-10W CO2 LASERS!

I got mine today too !!!  Packaging to the 10's  ;D

Nightstick -- are you running PWM or just 5v on the control line?  You are seeing what I get from my 15 mW (WATT updated) HV CO2.

I'm excited.    Thanks Chris............

Re: GB LIVE & OPEN for Small RF 5-10W CO2 LASERS!

Holy crap --- I may have smoked the coating on my Scientech sensor.
Same voltages as Nightstick.  I only ran it for 2 bursts of 5 seconds and even I'm impressed.  I've got to select a better thermal head for this beast.

Mike

Try to keep stuff a couple feet from the output coupler so it doesn't get damaged by smoke or flying crap !!

This does need PWM.  It has no analog slope.  It's either ON or off.

PWM -- Pulse width modulation.  A TTL driver circuit with the on /off ratio varying between ~ 5% and 95%.

Chris recommends 24 kHz at 90% duty cycle.

Lynn --

Depends on your heatsinking.  I think CW is OK if you have fans and good heat disappation.
The instructions say best efficiency at 24 kHz and 90% on cycle.
Watch your heatsinks and keep the time on cool until we have more info on power control.
How many fans do you have on yours?
Mike

I was thinking of using a 555 timer chip as my PWM but I think there are chips more suited to the purpose.

Re: GB LIVE & OPEN for Small RF 5-10W CO2 LASERS!

Mike right now just one big one and I keep feeling the laser and the heat sink and as long as I keep my on time to 5 sec burst it stays fairly cool just a little warm to th touch

Re: GB LIVE & OPEN for Small RF 5-10W CO2 LASERS!

The PWM input current is about 25 mA. Almost any TTL design will easily drive it.

Warning: As Chris stated -- this will set fire to almost anything in seconds. Know where it is pointed. Do not let it hit the couch or stuffed chair. This is not a toy. Please use a safe beam dump back-up for the target. Even unfocused, it packs the photons............

Re: GB LIVE & OPEN for Small RF 5-10W CO2 LASERS!

Good idea on the switch.  Put it in the PWM line or you will need a BIG 10 Amp switch in the mains line.

Mike

Lynn - Do you wear glasses? Plastic?? Be careful of your eyes. I'm dumping mine almost point blank into a power meter.
