Spicek --

I'm not sure I understand your "simple" 2 battery connection. *Battery 1 is the load?? *for what?? *With a series circuit, breaking the series connection turns off the power. *
I'm using presently 2 car start portable units in series and neither one is a load -- *only a power source of ~26 volts DC. *
Did the tube light up? * A single or even dual 12 volt source should not trash a 7815. * Is it possible you hooked it up backwards? *Are you sure the batteries are in series and not parallel?

Mike

I've read your post again and I can not envision your connections. *If you hooked it up backwards, the 7815 may have smoked. *With a little luck, the other components may be OK yet.
ReRead Chris's instructions about connections. Major damage may result --etc. What did you have connected to the PWM input.

Ooo, you got it Mike. My buddy had the connection wrong. The laser was hooked to Batt 1 +/- ! Would this explain the cracked 7815?Did this trash out the board?

OK -- As I said, I can't envision the wiring. *But connecting it to only 12 volts should not trash a 7815 regulator. *It simply would not work. *

There has to be more to this to cause the damage you report and MAYBE the driver is still OK.

Mike

Please explain battery 1 as a "LOAD" -- What is battery 2 ? I don't understand the connections of the input. Your driver may be different than mine. Is I recall, there's two drivers available. Did you have the tube connected? How much PWM drive?

Chris hard-wired the driver so it would 'plug and play'. The place where the PWM would be is jumpered with a blob of solder. I haven't wired in a switch so it is 'connect to power' and lase.

The connection was messed up with the batts. I am not an engineer by any stretch, but my ex-Marine buddy was ('nough said!), and he said that the way to hook it up was +/- *with the batts, and the laser (load) to the +/- of one of the batts. It didn't seem right to me but what do I know?

I see what we did, but don't know what the ramifications are...

Spikec ---

Please define "Laser Load" --- I don't have that other than the BNC connector to the tube. Do you have 3 power inputs?

NS, yeah there might be some bad luck but this one seems to be self-induced! Important safety tip - don't mix homebrewing and lasers!

Mike, by "load" I meant the laser PS board which gets the 28v input. On my setup this attaches to another board (the RF tuner I guess) via a 6-pin connector, which connects to the tube via the BNC.

Now I see -- I'm not familiar with that configuration. Chris just told me that some lead must have been hooked up backwards. That was my guess too.
He tests his product before shipping and had to do so on yours for the hard wired PWM.

I'd start by replacing the 7815 and check all connections.

For anyone here who just got one of these lasers and had to buy a 28-32V power supply, where did you purchase it from? I just got my laser today (wasn't originally intending on getting one but I had a YAG that I just didn't have time to align so I figured I'd swap that for one of these - Chris was nice enough to do an even trade) and I've looked around at a couple of places for a suitable power supply, but so far I don't like either the selection (lack of - not the right combo of volts and amps) nor the prices I've been getting, however I'm not up on the pricing of these things so that might be par for the course. Any suggestions?

I got my power supply 28 VDC @ 18 Amp from MarlinPJones as I recall. I haven't used it yet because I'm using 2 gell Cell car jumper packs in series. At full charge, I get ~26 VDC. My system tweaked to max draws near 16 Amps at max drive from the PWM. I can go down to 4 Amps at low duty cycle around 4 watts output.
