Re: Pgl 589 gb, new developments!!!!

From my understanding and emails with CNI they insist upon insurance and in order to insure it it must be declared at actual value. But you raise a good point maybe I can confirm this. My lord I bet Yang is so sick of me, lol! The email thread of ours is like 27 emails. Hell, whats one more.

They were willing to send me two lasers declared at 20$ each if I was willing to take the risk. So I'm quite sure they will do that for you as well. I did however cancel my order because I had no experience with wire transfer.

Yeah he must be pretty sick of so many emails without any purchases. More reason to ship it without insurance. :D

She has been really great and patient. I apolgized before but she really didnt seem to mind at all. Plus it helps she knows I'm doing everything in my power TO buy from them. I also wrote her sales manager telling him how great she has been. CNI has amazing customer care.

Option 4: Get a degree in photonics and build your own, it'd probably be less work and a lot cheaper.

Seriously though, has anyone here ever build a SFG laser?

Never heard of anyone on LPF do it but im sure it's been done! Though that person would either need: A LOT of patience, or some good schooling on how those things are made along with the funds for the parts :)

Re: Pgl 589 gb, new developments!!!!

I agree its risky going with a seller with not so good rep and I have thought about asking a trusted member outside the USA to receive the laser and re ship it to me. In fact I have done a bit of looking into this. Here is the problem. The LPF members who I would feel comfortable asking such a favor all live in countries that the import duties and taxes will be 30-40% of full value of laser and also the cost of shipping and insurance is taxed as well. Plus then the re shipping costs. So were talking like 400-500$ on top of the laser price to do this.

Canada is the best option with the lowest taxes on imports from China and I asked a member from there for their help but they didn't feel comfortable being involved and I fully respect their decision.
So my options are at this time 3 fold and Id appreciate hearing some feedback from everyone willing to give it.

option 1- Order from Armlasers.com cost $960
option 2- Ask someone in the E.U. and pay a lot more looking at about $1300-1400 total
option 3- I just got a reply from Ultra Lasers, whom currently can NOT ship >5mW to the States and this has been verified by the company. BUT.... they told me they anticipate being allowed to ship here in 4-6 weeks time. They quoted me $1100.

So there pos and negs to each option which is making it hard to decide. I think option 3 is best. Slightly higher cost but a trusted and respected company.
Your thoughts?

BTW- thanks everyone I really appreciate peoples help. I have rep'd you all. If I ever do get this laser I'm going to sleep with it every night considering the amount of effort put into getting it, lol!

Don't want to sound like a party breaker but I really think you're going to get screwed either way.

If you're willing to spend that much it's probably easier to book a hotel in Canada, ask CNI to send it there and go pick it up yourself.

I'd just wait and see.

Yeah, you live at the top of Oregon, so really Canada is only a few hours away.

Why would you think I'd get screwed by Ultra Lasers? They're a reputable seller.

edited to add- I also don't think the hotel idea is very good one. Firstly I'm skeptical CNI would even ship to a hotel address and second that's going to raise red flags like crazy with customs. Can a non resident citizen receive international parcels?

Never heard of them, which doesn't necessarily mean they're not reputable.

Even then, there's no way any company can guarantee US customs won't seize the laser and at one grand that is a hell of a risk, specially considering the fact that you won't be able to take legal action against the company if needed because importing said laser into the US isn't exactly legal...

I'm not from the US (or Canada) and many of my fellow countrymen do buy stuff online to be delivered to US hotels, only to pick the stuff up a week or two later when they visit. Not sure it'd have any impact on customs, but if Canadian customs are also after lasers you're pretty much out of luck.
