I understand, I hate committing to a group-buy that drags on forever. The deadline will remain as it is, and like I said before, we will proceed with 10 for sure, 5-9 we will have to decide as a group if it is worth it. I am willing to do the buy for 5-9.
How many are willing to proceed if we only have 5 buyers?

I just have sent a PM for dark_horse willing to enter the group buy list for the googles.
How many people are there in the list?
I 'm also interested to buy whether there is 5-9 or 10+ in the list i don't bother 5 or 10USD small economy

I think I'd like to get back in on this if everyone can overlook my earlier indecision :-[

I just need confirmation on one thing that I'm already 99.9% sure of (but I'm still new at this ;D) anyway: These are good to cover any wavelength I might be exposed to if I were to open up a DPSS green (namely 532nm, 808nm & 1064nm), right?

I'll confirm in the morning.

Yes, that is correct, they list these as OD4 for 800-1064nM-certified. Keep in mind that the power of the IR coming from inside a DPSS-green is much higher than the output in 532nM, although so is the OD of the goggles, its like they were already thinking of that .
And of course we would love to have you back in the buy Are you in?

I have been (silently, offline) agonizing over these goggles ever since the first post... I set aside the money for 2 pairs, I had my wife pick a style she likes, I researched every other source of goggles I could find, and here at the deadline I still keep running into the same concern I had the very first time I saw them:

Not enough red protection. These multi-wave are dead ***y, but they just aren't "multi" enough.

I've made spreadsheets and graphs and timelines. I've tried every argument, counter-argument, and delusion I can come up with and I still can't make this look like a good deal for me.

Getting down to the wire, it looks like it's time for me to just let it go. Dark_Horse, thanks for all the work you've done on this. Sorry I couldn't help out by bolstering the numbers.

Yes, I'm in. Put me down on the committed list for 1 pair.

Just for the sake of double checking: could someone take a look at these numbers and see if I'm in the ballpark:

OD 2.5 transmits 0.3162% which means the ML7's would attenuate a 532nM beam of, say, 1500mW down to about 4.743 mW
1500(0.3162/100) = 4.743

OD 3.7 transmits 0.0199% which translates to a 808-1064nM beam of, say 25000mW (25W) attenuated down to about 4.975mW
25000(0.0199/100) = 4.975

(I'm not sure if they are OD 3.7 or OD 4 at the 808 and 1064nm ends on the graph but if my numbers are close to correct, OD 3.7 is PLENTY good enough for me)

Thanks

Tony

Here's what I'm doing to get a little extra red protection (if I need it):

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=150281256739
American Optical glasses Surplus Gentex Ballistic NEW - eBay (item 150281256739 end time Sep-08-08 09:31:10 PDT)

I can't personally vouch for how safe they would be, but they were reviewed here (I hope its ok to reference another forum :-/):

I think the green clip on will probably even attach over these ML7's if desired. Otherwise the ML7's are just so versatile that I can't pass them up. I know, without a doubt, I'll be glad I got them. I can't find anything even remotely close to the ML7's anywhere else for under $205.

Default Re: **Multi-wave Goggles GB-*ML7's from OEM**

In day to day operations, the ML7 is what I reach for. They are convenient for laser systems testing. I have OD7 808nm and OD7 1064nm for the large systems and a pair that covers the blue end of the spectrum but they are not used anywhere near the amount of time I use the ML7s.

I have never seen a pair of laser protective goggles that protect against so many critical wavelengths yet still have decent visibility. Unfortunately, because they can do everything, they cannot do everything extremely well. The ML7 were designed with researchers in mind not hobbyists. This is why the red protection is so low. Low power alignment lasers like HeNe and red diode are generally used only for optical alignment and are very low power hence the low protection rating. High red protection usually encompasses the 671nm and the 694nm wavelengths corresponding to the red DPSS and the Ruby laser wavelengths where you would need higher protection.

Thanks guys for the help with the OD calculations. Especially you "FC" for all of your help, without which we would not have a ML-7 GB at all.
For those of us who may be math-challenged, (like myself), if you have a 300mW 630nM-650nM beam strike the lenses directly, here is what would get through, in a "worst-case scenario".
Example

300mW 650nm laser

300/10^1.5=9.47mW

This is still more than a "class 3A-5mW" by 4-5mW, but that is much better than the "nothing" I have now for my "reds", and anything other than a direct-hit would be much less than 10mW. Is anyone here wearing goggles for a 10mW laser? Plus the highest power 650nM I have right now is only 150mW.
This is a very personal-choice and I would not blame anyone for considering a higher-level of protection for your 630-650nM lasers, or any lasers for that matter, (the safest thing for your vision is to not use your lasers of course). I want to still be able to see my laser-dot or I will likley not be wearing them when I need them, or peaking over thier "rims". This will be just perfect for any laser I am likley to ever own. Everyone will need to evaluate based on your specific circumstances.
Most importantly, these are certified to meet the advertised specifications, be carefull of cheaper-goggles that rely on reflections, or other questionable methods for protection.
I am really hoping we can break 10 in the next day or two ;D ;D

Your calculation should be 300/10[sup]1.5[/sup]=9.47 or 300/10^1.5 = 9.47. The 1.5 is an exponent.

At OD 1.5, transmittance = 3.162%

So the way I calculate it (3.162/100)300mW = 9.486 mW
