it will take 2 cr123's or 1 18650. or even 1 dummy cr123 and a good one.

Why bother running it on low capacity cr123 batteries when you can use an 18650?

I think there need to be rectifier diodes to reduce the voltage if you're using two CR123s however, since the driver is designed for voltages < 5.5V and those CR123s can be as high as 4.2V each.

I think the diode is used if you're using the 3.0V non-rechargeable CR123A batteries, since it would be ~6V for two, and the diode should drop it down to below 5.5V.

Exactly if your going to use a flexdrive you CANNOT use rechargable cr123's. *You have to use primary lithiums and the diode to drop the voltage down to below 5.5v as rckstr has said. *The max voltage you can run *the flexdrive with is 5.5v. *If you use rechargable cr123's then fresh off the charger your voltage is going to be upwards of 8v and one single diode is not going to drop the voltage to below 5.5v. *The flexdrive is best used with the 18650. *You CAN use a rechargable there.

So here's your options.

Flexdrive: 2 lithium cr123's (diode inline), 1 cr123 (lithium or rechargable) 1 dummy battery, 1 18650 rechargable (only option I know of for the 18650)

Groove drive: 2 lithium cr123's, or 2 cr123 rechargables.

You still can't use the rechargables in pairs with the flexdrive. Yes they are rated at 3v but fresh off the charger they are GOING TO EXCEED 3v. even the lithiums exceed 3v brand new. something like 3.2v while the RCR123's are going to be around 3.8v or more.

so the only way to power a br with enough voltage is with primary cr123's with the diode in line?

Yeah or the 18650. *I highly recommend the 18650 as the flexdrive is 10% more efficient with the 18650 than it is with the cr123's.

Yeah, if you want to use the rechargeable CR123A batteries, as Kenom mentioned, just use a dummy battery, which DrLava actually gave a good link in the Sonar Cases thread, for $5 shipped:

are there electric diode components that will drop more than 0.5v? (so you wouldnt have to use a series of 5 diodes to reduce voltage off of two rechargeable cr123's to below 5.5v)
