Well, We've got shop time at $85 / hr add on to that materials. The prototype took a long time to try this then that, and get everything to work. 10 hours doesn't seem like a very long time, but at $85 / hr it sure adds up!!

Prototype shop time is $$$$ --- then add more $$$.
Reality sucks. I guessed $750 when it was actually $900.
Remember that this investiment has to be distributed over the whole order -- That's why he needs 100++++ orders. Every change or demand adds to the market price.
