The suppliers i'm talking to know what we use them for, and the price is still low, and they are expecting to get thousands soon.

Default Re: GGW-H20L 6x Sled GB!!! THE EPIC GB THREAD LAWL

Well, i took some time off, to do some testing.

I forced the ultra low efficiency de-canned 4x to put out >150mW. It's doing 157mW at 193mA.. Let's see how long this lasts..

The current is really high, which worries me, but the power is comparable to the first 4x i put through testing.
What i want to find out is, if diodes of a different efficiency are set to the same power (instead of the same current), which will last longer. The high or the low efficiency ones.... The low efficiency ones are at a disadvantage of the high current required to bring them to the same power.

EDIT: Just measured it at 152mW. Could it really be degrading this quickly?!? I thought it could be temperature, so i put it in my pocket powered up for a few minutes, for it to warm up, and it was back at it's original power.

Problem is, even at the super high current, the diode is still in it's kink. As it warms up and the kink moves up, the power gets higher. It's too dependant on the temperature. It's gonna be hard to track degradation this way.

Another thing that bothers me is, even if they can survive being pushed above their kinks, with 4x's, these kinks are often so long, that the beam is still deformed, when the graph would seem to indicate that the kink is over. I don't like distorted spots. I could push it till the spot fills out again, but then i woud shorten it's life even more.. I think PHRs have much shorter kinks... Or at least the spot fills out much faster, as you raise the current.

EDIT 2: I got bored of the kinky spot and pushed the windowless 4x a bit further, to 205mA, where it's putting out 170mW. But the spot is still deformed..

I also noticed something very interesting. I've never seen this before. It's a projection of the top of the pedestal next to the beam! I guess the light reflecting off the lens reflects off the pedestal and comes back out as a projection. Somehow it would seem the can blocks this under normal circumstances.

Did anyone ever see this with de-canned diodes?

EDIT 3: It's at <130mW now after less than an hour of use!

I stopped using it so that i can plot it again, and hopefully get to see what degradation really looks like. Since there's 40mW missing, the difference should be very noticable! This is the first time i'm happy about a diode degrading.. *;D

I'm still confused here after soooooo many posts. Is this for a 6X diode ?
I see 4x 12x 803 etc. Is there a 6x coming? That's all I want.

The 6X's were not 6X's. The supplier couldn't get them. AMK is looking again. We don't have a decision yet about refunds.

Peace,

Default Re: GGW-H20L 6x Sled GB!!! THE EPIC GB THREAD LAWL

It's possible, that oxidation sped up the degradation. It's an "open can"... I think 405nm's prefer an inert atmosphere.

It's as if the end facets are developing imperfections (spots burning up) at a faster rate. I've never seen a diode degrade this fast, nor this much without dying!

Well, i have seen some very-low efficiency PHRs degrade to a fraction of their original power, without dying. This is an ultra low efficiency 4x. The low efficiency obviously has to have a cause.

Perhaps pre-existing imperfections - if they are "evenly" spread out - can cause the diode to just degrade a lot, without dying, while a high efficiency diode with a "perfect" die, dies nearly instantly, once a single point defect developes and spreads enough.....

Kage: I don't really care what is happening on the inside, as much as i want to see how kinks behave during degradation. The first 4x i tested, degraded and dropped into the kink. I want to know if kinks move "up" or "down" on the graph, as diodes degrade, that's all. This is a 4x i already plotted in high resolution, and now that it degraded, i can repeat the plot, and superimpose them..

The reason i want to know this is, so that i can predict how diodes will behave, when set just below the kink, or just above it..

Not sure if it is a 6x or not... should have a small heatsink attached behind the blu-ray diode, as seen in this pic from GooeyGus (attached), but it doesn't look like it does.

I couldn't read the number on the sled, but everything else is consistent with the 4X sleds we got before.
