Interestingly enough, it's still a laser! But a 6mW laser with a hole in the middle of the beam....
Oh well. It was fun while it lasted....
EDIT: Ok, it's completelly dead now.
I've gotten all the way down to 85mA (65mW before optics) on my latest. *This just below the second kink. It has been going for 18 hours now. *I broke the window on this one, but the piece doesn't appear to be touching anything. *

Peace,

Did you graph the latest one, or are you assuming the second kink from your first graph?

Cos the one i tested only had one really long kink just above 100mW. Do you have any more graphs i could look at?

Sorry. I wasn't specific enough. I plead "early morning brain"

This is an assumed kink. I haven't gotten/taken the time to re-graph another one. I have the several single power tests that you have seen, but have not tried "ramping" another one up yet. I have a few more. I'll keep on it. If you want to spend some more of your limited time on these diodes, I'll send you a few more.

Part of the goal here is to see if these can replace the PS3/KES diode in lecture-type pointers. If I can find a good, consistent current/output, this will be a more "sturdy" diode to use in those low power applications. You know that my belief is that the inexpensive "salvaged" PHR's will not stay available.

Peace,
dave

I see.. Well, in that case, there probably is no kink there. It's most likelly somewhere else. Even with 4x's, kinks can't be anticipated. With lower power diodes it's even more inconsistent.

Why do you fear PHRs would dissapear?

I did actually fear that at the very beginning, but not anymore. By now, we have bought up so many sleds, that the hobby alone is probably worth keeping the production going, for the manufacturer.

These days PHRs can be had at ridiculously low prices directly from the suppliers. Because we buy so many. I don't see them dissapearing any time soon. The "12x" sled comes from the same suppliers anyway.

Or do you mean something else by "salvaged" PHRs? Is there anyone still ripping PHRs out of drives? :-?

I think that the 803ts that Jake21 gets have been salvaged from broken drives. That is why they are so cheap

Granted. *All of them (except that first freak) run above 90mA have died within a couple of hours. *It is faster for me to just reduce the current and burn another one than to graph each one. *I know it is not the science we would like, but it is all I have time for.

There is still a supply of these "new" that is mostly untouched because we are going through the "scrapped" ones. *No one is making these any more. *I do not believe that the hobby is buying nearly enough to justify a manufacturing run. *We are using several hundred a year (and even that will slow down). *A full manufacturing run of these should be in the thousands at least. *The cheap ones we are dealing with are QC rejects that were tossed into a bin for scrap. *That is why the sleds are so damaged. *When the "rejects" are gone, we will have to switch over to the ones intended for warranty work. *The supply set for warranty work was only created to "support" the HD DVD tech for one year. *That year is up. *Anything intended for HD DVD is out of production. *The focus is on blu-ray and improving that tech.

Peace,
dave

I agree with daguin. There is a limited supply of the PHR-803t's and eventually we will drain that well. Especially considering that these things are outdated HD hardware and not Blu-ray. If we can find a comparable drive in a Bluray reader (*which I find unlikely at this time) we might have a continued source, but it's niave of us to think these will always be available.

That may be true, however, as time goes on, this same process would apply to the 6X, then the 12X, etc. So why worry about the PHRs running out when we will all be wanting the more powerful ones anyway? I know I won't be looking over my shoulder at the PHR's if I can get damaged GGW sleds for $15 .

Because in MANY applications you don't even WANT a high output. Having a pointer you are using in lecture putting out 150mW would be a significant hazard for both the audience and you. Shining 150mW of violet light on a subtly fluorescing mineral specimen would completely over power that fluorescence.

High powered burning and beam shots are nice, but they are NOT the only use for a violet diode.

Peace,
dave

Regarding the 803ts, i personally think that the prices of other bluray diodes will have come down a lot by the time they run out. Even in may, we were worried that they would run out, but we still have them 6 months later

I don't think they were taken out of broken drives, more likelly, they were intended to be put into broken drives.

I was offered PHR sleds at a price that i dare not even post in public.. That's why they are so "cheap". In reality they are even cheaper.

^I think they're only that cheap because there is no other use for them and they are trying to get rid of them. *I will almost guarantee it cost them more to make the violet diode in these things than how much they are selling these sleds for. *If I had to guess, I'd say they're losing money on them and just trying to move them for whatever money they can because they're afraid of getting stuck with a few thousand sleds that they can do nothing with. *

Outside the laser hobby community, there probably isn't much demand at all for the PHR's. I could be wrong though....however....I'm seldom wrong.....if ever! (J/K) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

High powered burning and beam shots are nice, but they are NOT the only use for a violet diode.

That is a very good point, a lot of us don't think in terms of LOW power. :

Of course, IF the more powerful diodes were available at a low cost, they could be substituted for PHRs in low power pointers with an almost unlimited lifetime at 5mW. The only drawback I can think of might be efficiency at a level that close to the lasing threshold, but I believe the difference between a PHR and, say, a 6x would be pretty negligible...

Hmm, having said all this, I don't remember the PS3 diodes ever getting really cheap like the PHRs, either.. :-[

Damn, Dave, I think you may have convinced me to pick up a few more PHRs after all!

LOTS of lasers!

Honestly, I am not addicted to lasers; I can turn them off any time I want to.
