Thanks AMK and Treb! That's just what I wanted to know.

we DO NOT want the 4x sleds. We DO NOT want GBW-H10N's.
They have those ready to ship.

I'm pretty sure that's what I quoted, but I'll leave it to you.[/quote]

oh lol I thought you were complaining...

Re: GGW-H20L 6x Sled GB!!! THE EPIC GB THREAD LAWL

Based on some data i had from the e-bay diodes, i decided to test the diode only to a low current first.

It has the same low threshold (22-25mA), but i couldn't find the kinks i expected from the e-bay diode data, even tho this graph was made in a higher resolution.

The spot of this strange diode is surprisingly round through the plastic lens, but through glass it's the crappiest diode ever... The wavelength seems low.

This graph only goes to 115mA. I didn't want to kill it before gathering more info by plotting it through the glass lens.

So i will re-do the same graph through glass, then i will push the current higher. But i fear it won't last long. At 115mA, the Vf was already 6V. Either it has a very high Vf, or it's already extremelly overdriven.

Re: GGW-H20L 6x Sled GB!!! THE EPIC GB THREAD LAWL

oh well, so I guess these '12xs' are just expensive PHR's?

but I am looking forward to the 6x diodes. They said they have them in stock, and I gave them instructions for the photos. they will send them today hopefully....

they also insisted on their minimum order of 100 units, so we are a bit away from our goal!

Re: GGW-H20L 6x Sled GB!!! THE EPIC GB THREAD LAWL

Ok, i finished the testing of the so called "12x diode"..

It's an interesting diode, but... Well..
It's not a magical 12x diode from the future.

From what i've seen, it's probably weaker, than the PHR.. Possibly a 40mW CW/80mW pulsed diode. Altho this one had a relativelly high kink (compared to one ebay diode plot i've seen). But after the kink it just wasn't the same anymore.

As i was increasing the current from 127mA to 130mA, the power suddenly dropped from 102mW to 96mW, i then had to return it to 115mA for it to get to it's original power.

Then i plotted the kink in 1mA resolution. It starts at 127mA, and the power drops rapidly. It then takes 137mA  for the diode to get to the power it had at the start of the kink. After that, the power increases at a lower rate.

The highest power i reached was 121mW and it took 159mA to get there! After that i reduced the current to 115mA to check if the power is the same as before. It was, so the diode is probably still fine. But it might have already suffered some damage.

The diode is different from the diodes from the e-bay auction, but probably no more, than one PHR is different from another - standard manufacturing tolerances.

Anyway, it's clearly obvious, that the diode is not as powerful as a PHR, and it takes absurd currents to get it anywhere.

But Amk, since you paid for it, pick a current... ;)

Can I see the raw data? I think I see a distinct bend near 70 mA.

I saw those bends too.. That's why i stopped at 115mA for the first plot.

I was doing the plot at 3mA resolution, after seing those bends, i redid 67-73mA and 79-86mA in 1mA resolution, but it turned out to be nothing special, so i didn't even put that data into the graph.

I can put it in and replot it, and send to you, if you want. But i already wasted so much time on this!

The ebay diode plot i've seen had distinct bends at 90-95mA, 130-135mA and 175-180mA... I think the resolution there was 5mA but the bends were VERY noticable. Here, they were barelly there.

I just tested the "12x" diode again, by shining the enlarged spot on a fluorescent surface and going through the kink.

The kink in this diode is the worst i've seen! PHRs just "flatten out" - the spot splits into two parts, a larger and a smaller, one moves to the left, the other to the right. The deeper in the kink you are, the more split it is.

This diode has an abnormally round spot. And when i approach the kink, it looks normal, then all of a sudden, and without a warning, slightly over one half of the spot goes dark! It's instant! Then, as i increase the current that darker area of the spot slowly becomes bright again, but the distortion remains. With PHRs, the spot fills up again as you leave the kink. Here, the distortion remains noticable. And it looks bad....

Nice High-res plot, Igor!

I don't think I've seen any PHR diodes with a Vf above 6V and still live.

With a higher Vf, these diodes will use more power than a PHR at a given current...

These are "weak". ::)

Re: GGW-H20L 6x Sled GB!!! THE EPIC GB THREAD LAWL

Yeah, the efficiency is lower than PHRs.. It takes both more current and voltage to reach the same power output.

BTW, i pushed it up to 200mA by mistake! I though i limited the analyzer to 160mA!
But it survived this. The Vf was 6.3, and the power was 156.7mW... That is consistent with a mutant diode from the ebay sleds..

It' an interesting diode with a surprisingly round beam, but it can't really be used above 90mW and even there it would be severelly overdriven most likelly. If it was a bit more powerful, and could do 130mW with this nice round beam, it would be an interesting thing to have.

But as it is, it's not really worth $40-55...

6x's are the answer! We NEED 6x's! (NOW)  ::)

P.S. The "Diode Analyzer" works VERY well.. ;)
I need to finish the interface to my LPM, so that i can make each graph in 1mA resolution automatically.. This 12x took me WAY too long to do!
Mostly because of the resolution of course..... If i made bigger steps it would be easier, but i could then easily miss a kink.

Re: GGW-H20L 6x Sled GB!!! THE EPIC GB THREAD LAWL

I just realized, that one of my 4x diodes had a broken window..  :-?

I did my first decanning, didn't really expect it to survive, but it did. So while i was at it, i decided to plot it.

I expected a higher power due to no window, but it was low. It also had a REALLY low first kink. At least visually.
The spot started splitting at 115mA, but the graph doesn't really show this until later. After the spot is deformed, it takes 185mA to fill it out again. I ended the graph at 200mA, where it did 170.8mW..

Since i got them here, i guess it doesn't hurt if i post it here....

If i wanted to power this diode "safelly", it would have to be at 90mW.
If i want more power and a non deformed spot, it would have to be 150mW (185mA).. I guess i'll just set it there and do a longevity test.

I wonder if it's possible, that 4x's just vary so much, or if the diode somehow got damaged. But if it got damaged mechanically by the broken window, i would expect it to be dead, not just a lower efficiency.. :-?

Re: GGW-H20L 6x Sled GB!!! THE EPIC GB THREAD LAWL

On my first 6x harvest about a year ago, I damaged the window. It's easy to do. I didn't realize what had happened and the output went from good to bad to oops the lens trash damaged the face of the die under power :( It's hard to tell what happened with yours.
A warning to all that Blu's don't seem to have good window attachment. Be careful

Mike
