How are these for heatsinking? What sort of power are they safe to run in just an Aixiz module? Or is it not worth it and just heatsink the bejesus out of them and run 200ma???

Re: 6x Blu-ray SLEDS GB! GET EM WHILE THEY LAST

hey dan,

Up to now the "safe" current with adequate heastinking is in the area of 200ma. This does not mean that these diodes cannot go higher. Everyone who actually bought a 6x blu-ray burner payed a large sum of money for the diode and were understandably reluctant to push it to the limit and determine a maximum current. I have a feeling that this will soon change with the diodes coming into a reasonable price range loosing one would be nowhere near as disastrous as loosing one in the past.

I am hoping they will be reliable in the 250+ma area, because in theory this combined with Igor's lenses, we might/will/should/hopefully start seeing 300mw blu-ray builds popping up :O :)

Re: 6x Blu-ray SLEDS GB! GET EM WHILE THEY LAST

We are overdriving the poor PHRs by up to four times their rated power.. But i kinda doubt the 6x will be able to handle 3x it's rated power.. I fear mine is degrading even at 2x it's rated power. :(

The lens will reduce the strain on the diode, so a higher current will be just as safe as a lower current with an uncoated lens. But.. Oh well. We'll find out soon enough, i guess...

Thanks, AMK -- I just paid for 2 -- anybody want to buy some lower-powered blu-rays? ;) :'(

What is the rated power igor?

Re: 6x Blu-ray SLEDS GB! GET EM WHILE THEY LAST

hey sorry i jumped so quickly to say i wanted a 6x.... I do have the $$ for one of these but i already have a 6x diode... that i payed $190 dollars for. i dont know what i would do with another one.

thanks though!!!

even if i bought one, i dont think i would feel comfortable selling such a high powered laser to anyone that didnt know anything about lasers.

Of which one? The PHR or the 6x?

The PHR is believed to be a 60mW Sanyo diode, the 6x is believed to be a 105mW Sharp diode... I have both datasheets somewhere..
Some people say, that the PHR is the Sharp, but that's imposible, cos then they would all be able to reach 210mW, which is the Sharp diode's pulsed rating..

The forward voltages, currents vs. powers and other characteristics seem to match the datasheets... With some imagination you can force the PHR onto the Sharp datashet, but i've been thinking about this for a long time now, and it can't be. It is only 100% reliable and somewhat consistent at low powers, at high powers, they suddenly start exhibiting huge differences among themselves..

So the 6x is a much more likelly Sharp candidate... It is also closer to actually being 405nm.. The PHRs vary much more, just like the Sanyo datahseet suggests.

Keep in mind, we have always been pushing diodes to their pulsed ratings.. Blu rays are built differently and have longer end facets (mirrors), and can withstand more abuse, before commiting COD, whch is one of the reasons we can push them so hard - at least for a while.

But there are other faults, that start accumulating in the die, and eventually lead to COD, it just takes longer. This is something, even the scientists don't fully understand yet and have to make up theories first ;) (i read this interesting article about 405nm diode degradation)..

Thanks - so 200mA it is for about 200mW then :)

Re: 6x Blu-ray SLEDS GB! GET EM WHILE THEY LAST

About yeah, you can get 200mW at 190-210mA appoximatelly..

Again, like with PHRs, the efficiency will vary, but since these are higher power diodes, the variations are lower, they are more consistent.

My first 6x doesn't have the highest efficiency, and at almost 200mA it's still at "only" 189mW or 185mW when it warms up. But unlike with pushed PHR diodes, which give me almost the same power, or sometimes look as bright at only 120mW, it's a different feeling. I'm not constantly waiting for it to pop, you know.. ;)

you made a big mistake. Round 1 is all said and done for. You had to wait for round two. Now I have to squeeze you in. Always read the thread and instructions before doing things

Good thing I read the entire thread before paying up,..... on the other hand kind of a bummer I missed the party.

I'll be down for at least 1 when you get "Batch 2" up and running,... hopefully they still have some left for another batch.

Thanks!!!
