Based on the way the bottom is built it seems the likely scenario. Picture taken from wesdamans thread in general.
If this sled can write Blu Ray disks at 12x speed, i really don't care if it has sufficient heatsinking in the sled..

My diode analyzer is twitching in anticipation..
This is the almost finished (lacks some LEDs) OmniDrive TM in "manual mode", where it helps test many diodes quickly, to find the safest power for each individually.
In "automatic mode" it plugs into my meter, and the meter sends all the data to the computer. The data can then be used to plot very accurate graphs in high resolution. A before and after graph would show any degradation in great detail!
An Excellent job on the Diode Tester! *

Once Igor gets a hold of one of these diodes, it will end all the speculation for sure.

And until his 405 AR coated glass lenses are ready, we don't have anything that can handle the power without melting, unless you want to buy Merideth's *:

405's more powerful than red OC's! *Oh PLEASE DEAR (insert favorite deity's name here) let it be true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D
A good idea may be to switch the plastic lens every time you recharge the batteries... ;D

Otherwise, the Meredith lens is a very good lens! The best lens i have tested so far is actually Meredith's step-sister! The only difference is the diameter (the sister is larger) and the coating... The beam specs will be identical.

Haha, thank you Jay!

I appreciate it. Thanks to your encouragement, i hope to soon upgrade it to aluminum panels for a cooler look..

LaserBee: It would seem that we get to test one first! Theoretically, this diode might not even have a kink up to above 200mW!! That would be the first sign it's a good diode - better than 6x!

I have spoken to the supplier as well, given the same pics "AD112" sled. *Every time i asked them what write speed it was 4x, 6x, 8, 12x, *the only answer i got was "I do not know". * I did however purchase 2, shipping kicked my ass *: *but 1 will be given to Kenom to see what he can do with it and see what he is able to find out. *In the mean time, i still have 2 coming from batch 3 here. *I will just safeguard my sleds til we know what we are dealing with here. *I, being electronically illiterate, would just end up destroying them accidentally. *So, time will tell, and i hope this is the real thing!!! * 8-)

Ted

EDIT: I am not trying to step on any toes, nor will i be doing any GBs of my own. I merely am reiterating the point that we need to factually find out what diode is in this sled.

Prototypes?
Failed experimental runs?
Early entries into the competition to be accepted as the "standardized" format
Runs with other compatibility problems?

Remember, on the way to establishing a "standard," there are, by the very nature of the process, "left overs" and "also rans." *These "left overs" are usually "trash" for the makers. *They would probably be very pleased to be able to make a buck back on them. *

Keep the PHR sleds we are using now in mind. *These sleds were all absolute trash to the makers. *They won't work in a DVD burner, but they are fine for us.

It might not be worth buying 100 of them yet, but it is worth getting a few to see what they are.

Peace,
dave

Amk, if they turn out to be 12x and they are atill the same price, you can count me in for 4.

IgorT, great work on the laser diode tester. I was also making a laser diode tester, but after waiting for a dual DAC IC from a friend for two months I decided to sample new ones, I discovered they were deprecated, and sampled other ones. I received them but now I don' t feel like finishing the supply any more. In the mean time, the LPM-PC interface was also a failure (50Hz ripple, which the panel meter seems to ignore)

Thanks..

Untill now i was not able to do extensive testing on my diodes, as i had to test many in a row, and i would have to use two DPMs, a driver and a dummy load and a mess of wires, and keep switching back and forth between the diode and the driver. I simply didn't have time for that, and i hate wires! This device replaces all that, and makes testing easier, faster, more detailed and safer at the same time! Now i can finally test each diode individually without it taking days.

The top pot sets the max current, the bottom adjusts from 0-100% of the limit, and does so linearly - the current doesn't start increasing more and more the higher it gets. And the best part is that the info is recorded by the computer through the meter, and i can simply paste it into excell to make a graph.

Did you make the LPM interface yourself? Is your meter powered by an unstabilised AC/DC wall-wart?

It's all good if we get to TEST them first. A simple search for the first kink would tell us if the diode is better than a 6x for example...

We got a little too excited with the "6x's".. I would love for these to be for real.. But lets not jump in too quickly..

Amk: Where did the info they are 12x come from? My supplier has no idea what they are from.. Info is good. It helps with decisions..

Wal-mart? We don't have that in europe. No, the LPM is powered by two 9V batteries (knimrod meter) and the DAC was powered by USB.

Omitted are minor lasers, unworthy lasers, and bare diodes.

Forever wanted: ~505nm laser (and not just one of many lines!)
