Default Re: 6x Blu-ray SLEDS GB! THEY ARE GOING FAST!

I have this suspicion...

So far i heard, that the 4x diodes have a shorter, more consistent wavelength, than PHRs, but a similar beam profile.

The powers after acrylics were measured relativelly low, in comparison with other diodes at the same currents.
But with shorter wl diodes, more light gets wasted in acrylics. With flatter beam diodes, again more light gets wasted in acrylics. These have both a shorter FL and a flat beam...

With short wavelength PHRs, there can be up to >43% more power behind the acrylic lens! The correction factor i used before (1.28x), to estimate the raw output of 4x's, could be too conservative.

In any case, i got my 4x package today, so i can test this.

If so, it could explain why some 4x's died at what seemed like low powers.
It will also allow a better comparison to that datasheet.

Default Re: 6x Blu-ray SLEDS GB! THEY ARE GOING FAST!

Wow, i just realized another thing.

Those reports about the power climbing. Did anyone notice the beam or spot become blue-er, while this was happening? Probably not, cos it's a hard thing to notice without comparing two side by side..

But i have this theory... I have seen PHRs climbing in power as they warmed up. Experts said "mirror alignment", cos the efficiency can not climb with heat.

But something else can. The wavelength!

With short wavelength PHRs, the losses in acrylics are up to 30% - there is over 43% more power behind the lens! With long wavelength PHRs, the losses in acrylics are "only" 21% - there is over 26% more power behind the lens.

So if a diode was to climb in wavelength, while the actual power would remain the same, the power AFTER an acrylic lens would climb. I used to think that this was a small difference, but now..

If a diode is putting out 200mW, and has a short wavelength, the power after an acrylic would be 140mW. If it then climbed in wavelength a lot, it could "shoot up" to 160mW after an acrylic lens. It would seem like the power is climbing with heat, but in fact, only the wavelength would change.

Also, if this diode should have the same losses in acrylics as that short wavelength PHR i tested, that would mean, that when you push it to 140mW after an acrylic lens, it's already doing >200mW! If you add the reflections to that, and this is the Sharp diode, that would mean it's already pushed above it's pulsed ratings!

If you push it to 170mW after an acrylic lens (and the wavelength stays the same), it might actually be doing >243mW. If you push it to 200mW, it would be doing >286mW!

I don't think even a 6x could survive that for too long.

Anyway, the GGW 6x has a beam profile, that causes it to have the lowest losses in acrylics of all diodes. The 4x has a beam profile and a wavelength, that could cause it to have the highest losses in acrylics.

So while it may seem like a weak diode, it may actually be way more powerful than we think! This could explain, why some of them died at powers that seemed too low! And i have just the thing to test this theory....

I better start extracting my 4x's.. This is suddenly becoming very interesting!

Uhm, well my phr-803T turned indigo at >500mA's and almost blue at 650mA's...Don't worry it was totally dead and didn't start lasing until 300ma's.

Its kind of off topic but it means that the wavelength can really change quite a bit under the right conditions.

Although it was not one of these diodes (an e-bay 160mW, as claimed) mine
seemed to pulse into a much, much bluer colour immediately before it died.

Yes, I thought it was a warning at the time but was out of the house and it looked so pretty I just couldn't switch it off . . . . :

Yeah, i don't even have to look, to tell you for sure, that that was an overpriced and overrated PHR diode. Even the GGW 6x is not rated for 160mW CW, cos if it was, it could do 320mW.

The fake toughness of the PHRs gave scammers opportunities like no other diode before it.

One of my PHRs projected yellow when it died!

But i'm not talking about abnormal operation.

Every diode climbs in wavelength with heat. And blu-rays climb in wavelength with power. PHRs much more than others. I think 4x is more consistent in wavelength than a PHR. The Sharp datasheet suggest a wavelength drift of only 2nm between 10 and 105mW. 6x's are also more consistent. With PHRs it's much more than that.

P.S. Editing quotes only takes a second.

Default Re: 6x Blu-ray SLEDS GB! THEY ARE GOING FAST!

I spent like an hour, when i was extracting my GGW from it's heatsink. But i was scared to death, so i was way too careful.

But if you do it right, the GBWs are actually easier to extract than the PHRs! With the PHRs, the heatsink is hard and brittle. I grab it with two pliars, and snap it at just the right angle, and they are out instantly.

Here the heatsink is soft and pliable. I grab it firmly by the edges with two pliars, one on each side, and then i twist it carefully. If i am careful, and the pliars don't slip, the heatsink bends and releases it's grip on the diode. Then i jst take it out. The heatsink stays in one piece, but deformed..

The key is holding it FIRMLY with the pliars ending right by the diode base, but not on it. Then i make very small twists back and forth, and i can see the diode released. If done right even the beam "circulariser" stays in place.

If the pliars slip and break or cut off the edge of the heatsink, it then becomes harder, so it has to be a firm grip at just the right spot.

I was actually worried how long it would take, since i was so slow with the 6x, but this way, it's actually easy. Of course, if you only have one, and are worried, it's better to do it very slowly. I damaged the base of the first diode, but mostly because i tried it in a different way.

Default Re: 6x Blu-ray SLEDS GB! THEY ARE GOING FAST!

That's the exact method I used on my first two Igor! The diode is seated so shallow into the stock heatsink, that it just looked like it wanted to be 'wiggled' loose... Looking forward to your test results. :

Yeah guys i know PP does it, but in a way i dont have any problems with it, only that it delays the process of things. Cause if someone did hack into my account and used all my funds i would be pissed and ask how come they didnt notice it?? so thats why im not angry at them, just annoyed.

because i made payment for 4 4X BR sleds from AMK, 30 Drivers from Ryan and paid more than $1000 for the sled GB, thats why they did that. but its OK. Just not the part where i was being humiliated on public.
