Re: 6x Blu-ray SLEDS GB! GET EM WHILE THEY LAST

Ok, so I took some quick measurements:

88mA = ~4.85V
134mA = ~5.15V
204mA = ~5.45V

These aren't exact, but you get the idea. The voltage tended to start higher (about 0.2-0.3V higher) and slowly dropped down to about the values above.

I'll try to get some more detailed measurements later... gotta go carve a pumpkin right now :)

Which diodes are which?
And how do i remove them from their heatsinks? I don't wanna kill them (except the IR), so i need some tips...

Does anyone have tips for removing these diodes from their heatsinks? :-/
I am too scared of killing it...
If these are like the Open Can sleds then use a hacksaw/file to get through the heatsink, and then twist it apart like the way we extract the 803Ts. Obviously watch how deep you're cutting.

Any other way besides using a hacksaw?

In your picture, the one on the right is the Blu-ray, the one in the middle is the Long canned Red.

I use a small pair of Vice-grips to hold the aluminum tab at the front of the blu-ray diode. Then use a fine toothed hack saw blade. You want to cut almost all the way through the thin metal, but not touch the diode can!

Then, use a small flat blade screw driver to stick into the hack saw 'slot' , and carefully twist from side to side and 'snap' the rest of the way through. Then the diode is loose.

be creative! use a vice grip, some plyers, a rotary tool maybe, and some wire nippers.

Because i didn't wanna double post.
I got the BR diode out :D
I kinda cut into the bottom gold colored part though... But that doesn't really affect the performance :D
Now for the red diode...
BTW, I have always wondered why most diodes i have ever harvested have those plastic sticker like things on the top of the can. What do they do?

Re: 6x Blu-ray SLEDS GB! GET EM WHILE THEY LAST

Just tested my power output.  ~188mW at 204mA  :cool:

Clearly visible beam... I like  ;D

Now to do more voltage/current testing.

EDIT:  OK, this took a while, but I made up a plot with current, voltage and power.  It was all done by hand, meaning I didn't have a logging power meter or anything, just took readings and plugged it into Excel.  They may not be entirely accurate as the almost all of the values tended to fluctuate with time, so I just made a "guesstimate" for some.  The voltages tended to be higher at first, then drop rather quickly then keep dropping gradually, so I just waited ~2 sec and wrote it down.  Power also tended to fluctuate, so I wrote down about the middle of fluctuations and usually let it settle for about 20-30 seconds.  I also had to change the power supply (didn't use a battery) around 230mA because i realized that it was only rated for 200mA and the power tended to be dropping with time.  Well, hooked up one good for 1.6A and it tended to increase a little over time... so who knows, I'm tired, didn't feel like going back and doing it all over again  :p

Lens = Aixiz acrylic, meter= coherent surplus thermopile w/ knimrod board, heatsinking was just an aixiz module head clamped in vise, driver = mine :), power source was 9VDC wall adapter.

Re: 6x Blu-ray SLEDS GB! GET EM WHILE THEY LAST

Nice job with the graph rkcstr!

This makes 4 test diodes that all have shown the same mW to mA power. I am guessing from the power readings on your graph, that you must have been using an AixiZ acrylic lens (like Amk) for the testing...
