Have you tried a hacksaw? I know it sounds lethal, but on tricky heatsinks I stick the diode/heatsink in a vise and use a hack saw and lightly file away at the heatsink. I do this till I am about ready to hit the diode. Then I do the same thing to the other side. From there I use the 803T technique and twist on opposite sides and the heatsink breaks.

I do the same thing, but I use the corner of a square metal file. The "teeth" of a file are smaller so there is less vibration. It is the ONLY way I found to reliably get the diode of the DT-0811 out of its "half sphere" heat sink.

Ok, so the sleds look identical to the edited picture, and the one wannaburn posted. the one I killed was darker red, so I doubt it was the red LD. The 3rd diode has this insanely messed up heatsink that is impossible to get the diode out of, but i will try.

I think we are confuzzling between different models and using the same model picture to represent our findings??

Would any of you guys be interested in a driver with a range specific to these diodes?

I know, at least for my driver, the low-range driver's peak output is kinda short of what most people want to power these diodes, then the high and full range you may risk accidentally turning too far if you happened to be adjusting while powering the diode (shame shame!). So, my idea was to make it ~80-250mA. That range could be modified some as well, but I figure its low enough for those who may want to REALLY underpower their diodes, and high enough to satisfy a slightly masochistic need for experimentation without (theoretically) blowing the diode. ;D

What you guys think?

great idea man! id buy a couple before the inflation sets in and these cost a whole bunch more!

for the inexperienced: this works great, esp. using Daguin's sugestion - BUT (voice of experience here) if there's an open can in there, you need to be very careful not to damage the LD's exposed innards in the process of twisting it out.

What about metal shavings? I mean its obvious that it would be wise to NOT get them in there in the first place but what happens if they do? Are they very sensitive to it even if you manage to get the metal out with out damaging the innards?

From the looks of it, with some calculations, it'll be something like 85 to 255mA.

well, of course anything left inside the LD can cause a short-circuit - but there's also the chance that a piece of metal would break the fine gold wires that connect the pins to the actual LD, either when landing there or when you try to get it out.

It is possible to carefully clean out an open can, but you would probably need a microscope or at least a very good magnifier. I use a dissecting microscope that I bought fron the university's "bargain barn" used equipment store.
It has been invaluable for repairing tiny things, and for soldering surface-mount parts.[sub]

Houston, we have a problem... This is my 20l sled, I used the red and BR leaving the IR. Are your pics GB sleds?

Edit* The red diode should be a long open can red. These sleds you guys have look like maybe 4x? My 6x was manufactured in spring 08. That burner cost me 450. in total, I have another here still new, but at 250$ I think Ill give the GB sleds a go first. Hopefully my original fears of the GB's being a :-/ 4x wont come true..[/quote]

Ok... clarification then:
The diode that I lit up at low current, shined red. So I just assumed it was a red diode. But it is not an open can. If the red diode is an open can, then I must have thrown them away when I harvested my 6X sleds thinking they were the IR!

I'm going to edit the picture again to reflect what you are verifying wannaburn. Sorry about all of the confusion...

This is getting confusing...

wannaburn, could you please verify the model number of the drive that your picture of the sled is out of? Is it a GGW-H20L?

I just looked at the two diodes that I kept from my GGW-H20L sleds (thinking they were the red diodes), and the heatsink that they are in, look different than the IR diode in the picture you posted above??

Could we be looking at sleds that are almost exactly the same, but maybe different diodes in there?
