Re: 6x Blu-ray SLEDS GB! GET EM WHILE THEY LAST

What is the sweet spot to run these diodes at? And what kind of power will that deliver?

I think everybody agrees on 190mA~ 200mA for about 200mW.

When i set my 6x to 197.6mA, it did 193mW. Now it's doing 186mW. It's been through a lot of HEAVY use (but always kept cool), just like all my blu rays, and while it survived what no PHR ever could, it may be degrading.. :(

I should have measured the threshold current when i got it, it's the only way to know for sure. But the power first went to 191 then 189, sometimes returned to 192mW when i cooled it down, but now it's 186, and i have to cool it down from the outside, to get it to 189mW..

It is going into the torture chamber now, to see what happens. I will measure the threshold, set it higher, run it a bit, and if i see another power drop, i will re-check the threshold and then i'll know for sure..

Here is a 22 minute graph of the 6x in my tiny host. It was pre-cooled, so it reached 189mW. After about 3 minutes it reached equilibrium, and stopped climbing in heat. At this current it creates approx 0.8W of heat. In comparison, an open can at 420mA creates ~1W...

Umm, didn't i say "lots of heavy use"? ;) I normally use it for 5-15 minutes straight, especially when i'm outside at night. Sometimes even more. Sometimes i turn it off for a short time in the middle and then back on a couple of times, but not for it to cool off, as it never gets warm.

That graph is 22 minutes long, and represents maybe double my average use. For testing purposes i often left it on for longer than that. One time it was on by accident till the battery shut down, which might have been an hour or more. But it actually heats up faster from being held in hand, than from working..

It's in the exact same build as my tiny PHR blu rays. Same host, same heatsink/module, same driver, only a higher current setting. (i even have an open can in there at 420mA).

Here's a picture. This is my 6x. 3.8 inches long, 0.89 in diameter..

Re: 6x Blu-ray SLEDS GB! GET EM WHILE THEY LAST

what I like to do is pop out the innards of a DX true greenie (like 5mW), then remove the green module, hot glue Aixiz module to the PCB inside the thing, (inside aixiz module is rckstr driver or Flex drive) and then hook positive to the case pin on the diode, and negative in through the switch on the PCB. pop in 2 10440's, and you have a hand held blu-ray pointer!!!

its easy to do with blu-rays because the case pin is not used.

amk

That's the idea...

If it really should be degrading, then i won't lose much, since in this case, it is doomed anyway. And it will tell us what to expect from the others. If it can take even more, i'll also get to know more.. So in any case, the results will be usefull one way or the other.

Since it has been through so much already, it gives me a look into the future, for all the others..

Altho, to be honest, i don't expect these to be able to take much more. At least not in the long run. There are certain reasons why 405nm diodes are tougher than reds, but it only means it takes longer for you to realize you pushed it too far.. Reds at least had the courtesy to die right away.

I upgraded to a FlexDrive as well. :) Nice output through the Meredith glass lens! Steady as a rock...(Coherent PM5200)
