I was absolutely elated to see another OEM group buy come up again. This past year I've been regretting not buying goggles for red the previous GB, as I thought I'd never need them; it was actually a pretty good gamble, as the reds are only becoming very powerful now. Still, I'm really feeling limited in what I can do because I don't have sufficient red protection. You have to jump on these things, or you'll be paying $100 more just to source the goggles yourself without the discount, or need to wait another 2 years to get in on another GB--if it happens.

Plus, why limit yourself to just blue or green? Once you have one or two wavelengths you'll want to diversify your collection or do more advanced things like combining. Red is already in very high powers, with a mW/$1 ratio that is fast approaching that of blue, and far surpassing all but the most expensive greens. While not "exotic", green is now one of the more expensive wavelengths along with 405nm, where previously it used to not be.

Buying goggles for red, in my mind, would probably be a more worthy investment than for green, especially as it is good to also have IR protection for your green goggles. In Improvidus's case, those DBDs cover 445nm, 532nm AND the IR wavelengths. It's a great general-purpose pair--better than my ML7s I'd say--that costs less than buying two goggles to cover those wavelengths separately (like I'm doing). Watch as he starts making projectors and other stuff, making great use of those goggles.
I'm certainly not arguing against safety, I agree that this is a great opportunity for great protection at a lower price. I just thought I'd chip in as to cost - I know that at least for myself at this time, buying these level of goggles is a decent expense, and I'm only buying one (and acting as proxy for a friend), not even near the $500 mark the post in question was around. So I guess it would be more appropriate to say to Imp, take the time between now and the payment date to make sure you have a good idea what your future laser plans are, and buy accordingly to get the most for your money. Pretty generic advice I know, but no harm in chiming in, right?

Default Re: GB oemlasersystems goggles

Agreed Shadow - it took me 4 days on and off looking at the glasses to find what would be most suitable in my circumstances, then I came into the group buy with my order of ARG and RB2.

The next purchase after this will be a power meter.

I figured while I'm buying tools to make a big projector, I may as well grab good eye protection, and a meter so when I spend a small fortune on class IV lasers in may, I'll be able to ensure that I dont blind myself or get ripped off by an underspec laser.

This group buy happened with perfect timing. I'm pleased I decided to drop everything and concentrate on finishing my projector. Along the way I've also amassed some nice tools, such as my drill press, vice grips and jigsaw. I'll also end up with a power meter and some great saftey eyewear to go with it. (just need to get a set of work gloves and a pair of power tool saftey glasses now :P)

I'm thinking about DI4 instead of ARG. It looks like the YG3 might help protect against green a little bit. That way I'll have protection againt red even though I don't mess with red much. I do have some protection for green that I bought from Glenn a while ago. I just don't like the low VLT of the DI4.

Maybe take a look at the DBY. Simliar to DBD but about $20 less with better red than the YG3, but still not much. Great protection for UV up to 534 and all the IR used for green. With 35% VLT, $157.5 retail, 118.13 discounted, not too shabby.

Are you basing that statement on the graph? There is no indication of any protection at green wavelengths in the certified specification. If you're going to buy certified goggles, and then using them outside their certification, what is the point of buying certified goggles?

You can try the HNE too. Slightly better VLT (18 vs 12), but essentially the same red protection.

Ultimately though... a pair of DBY and RB2 will give fantastic coverage across the spectrum minus 534 - 600 with a VLT around 35%.

I might just go for those 2 instead. It would be nice to have more protection for 808 though. Especially when messing with 2W+

If you pay $20 more you can get the DBD and get 808 covered too for a reduction in VLT (36% vs 23%).

I'm also down for DBD... but need to figure out if I need style 700 or 900. Pretty sure the ones I have are 900... but need to check.

Might also go in for a second pair to cover reds. Actually not sure if I need that much 808nm protection.... DBY might also work... not sure if I want to trade off the VLT

Do you guys have any suggestions for something more budget to cover the gap from 532nm to 808nm?

Hi - any news on the goggles? If you could send the payment details it would be great!

I haven't had any time to look lately, school projects, exams, and trying to find a house to move to... takes a lot of time. Soon as I have a moment though, I'd be more than happy to do some research and give my 2 cents

This is probably not the answer you need/want, but if you don't think you actually need 808nm coverage--and maybe you won't if your greens are sufficiently filtered--you can just get some ARGs to protect against 532nm. The goggles that cover both are all in that $150+ range.

Unless you're going to be opening up DPSS lasers to align them and stuff, you could probably just buy some IR filters and stick them on whatever DPSS lasers you happen to think that leak too much IR. The latter may have been the better choice in my case, as I later found out.
