This is both another reminder that the company of choice to many of us, LaserGlow has a "Boxing Day Special going on ('till Jan 7) with 25% discount on all in stock lasers!
I will order by the 6th and would welcome a Group Buy, I am getting at least two (7) Galileo lasers. Galileo Lasers  are fantastic as is, and the pot is easy to reach (although turning it up voids the warranty!)  Not counting shipping outside ConUS, they are now $79. ea. and SO much better quality than a DX, besides, they have a constant "ON" switch and can run a very long time on the lithium CR123A battery it has.  Also the LaserGlow lasers have tested and proven IR filters!
I sold three of these to astronomers (really happy campers!) and have used them personally, I have pot modded a couple up to 55 mw with no problems and in 15 min. only very slight warming noticed.  I am ordering an Aquarius -10 as well, so talk to me if there is any laser you are ordering or want from LaserGlow! , this is LaserGlow quality !!!
The Boxing Day Special is over now!   :( :( :(  I hope you got in if you wanted one!  :) :) :) Latest! See new group buy thread:  http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1201195088

We just need 4 more Galileo lasers to get the next price break! With the features like a reliable IR filter, constant "ON" switch, and great beam visibility, I can't imagine why more LPM people aren't jumping on these Galileo lasers! ;D  ;D  ;D  ::)

It will void the warranty, but I can't resist modding some of these Galileo lasers!

Well I did not think they would sell out of the Galileo -5 but, I think the Galileo -3 is just about as good if you want to mod it, and they cost a little less too!  I sent Justin an email, to try to ascertain if they would be equal with a pot mod!  Also don't forget LaserGlow has lots of other lasers in stock!

True the Galileo 5 is back ordered, and Justin of LaserGlow says they will have them back in by about 2 weeks, so order away on these but,  (DARN) no 25% off!  I can hardly wait!  Galileo lasers are such fine lasers, maybe I shouldn't have sold that last one!  LOL!   ;D ;D ;D

Yes you can etch black plastic and pop balloons with a lens to make the dot very small! I have done these things with a Galileo that was at about 25 mW! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Abray greetings, I am sorry but I don't know exactly what you are asking? Sure you can get any laser from LaserGlow during the special for a 25% off as long as it's in stock. I will order by the 7th of January, and will save a little as they will ship all these lasers together to me. I will devide up the shipping charge to the participants, and therefore your laser will cost a little less (shipping inc.), than ordering it by yourself, if this works well. I know the total savings may be less than $10 on a galileo, but, for some of our lasers it could make a bigger difference. Insurance outside the U.S. adds a lot more to shipping cost than inside the U.S. and we are getting that 25% off in stock items, but, also please let me know if anyone out there wants any back ordered items too, they won't get the 25% off but, I will try to save some where I can, and I think the yellow and blue units are going to be a cool deal as well and the galileo 5 should be around about a week after the GB from what I am told if these appeal to some of us. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

scopeguy, thanks, I got your PM also, but yeah I was talking about different lasers in particular. I MIGHT be interested in the yellow laser, but I don't think I will have enough money. I will probably just have to go with the Galileo. Not saying that it is a bad laser...

I have been asked "what power level is the Galileo able to put out when modified and not overheat?" So I have tested a small number of the Galileo 5 units, and have found out a few details. The Galileo 3 and Galileo 5 have a 500 mW IR pump diode, the crystal set on most green laser pointers (GLP's) will convert about 8 to 18 % (lower or higher is possible) but they have been doing better with so many being made. Most of the <5mW GLP's are turned to have the IR diode operating under 25% of it's possible 500 mW simply to take very long to heat up and to qualify as a class IIIa laser pointer. If you turn up the pot the IR diode is going to put out more IR and heat up more quickly. Most portable lasers need to be run for well under 200 seconds at a time to keep from overheating if they output over 40 mW, but this varies with crystal efficency and how well the laser heat sinks the diode. Aluminum transfers heat quite well, but the added time to overheat is only several tens of seconds if too much heat is being produced. Heat problems aside (as with short duty cycles <90sec.) most 500 mW IR diodes paired to say a 15% efficent crystal set, will be outputing 70 mW of Green light, and should not have a shortened life span. At about half that crystal efficency, you still could be safe with 35 mW for the conservative duty cycles. For these estimates, I would power the IR diode to 95% of it's rated 500 mW. I hope this helps as I have not had trouble with burning out diodes but there is always that possibility. Watch for heat, and don't expect 70 + mW, (I'd say stay well under 60 mW) and you are less likely to burn out your laser with short duty cycles.

So, as a comparison to a "True" Dx 50mW, what is the technical difference (excuse my ignorance)
Do they too use a 500mW IR Diode?

I know that the Galileio's are higher quality and CR123A batts etc., but I just wondered what the differences are compared to a cheapo laser.

Hello danielbriggs! I don't know for sure what IR diode the DX 50 uses, but I was somewhat disapointed with the "build quality" of those I had gotten. The threads to open for the battery were far from smooth. Almost alll the GLP's I have found out what powers them have been either a 500 or an 800 mW IR diode with the latter being much fewer. Unfortunatly DealExtreme is a very unlikley source of technical information, so if anyone knows for sure please tell us! Thanks!

Oh yeah, the Galileo has a good IR filter and a constant "on" switch, but not on the DX pens! DX pens have a momentary switch, and filter is questionable.
