Re: GB feeler laser barrels

I'm pretty sure it will take a few weeks for us to hammer out the prototype from the manufacturing companies end. Get everything ready then from there it is a matter or a week or two to machine the barrels. it will be a bit back and forth letting everyone see what we've come up with and showing them specs of the design. Ballpark I'd say 1 month to a 1 1/2 months. I should have in hand by then the boards and clicky's and boots and last but not least the lenses. It's a matter of quickly assembling the clickies, and boot, then screwing in the lens and ship em off. 2 months tops.

Re: GB feeler laser barrels

it saddens me to have to do this folks, but I'm looking at having to fork out well over $700 to make this happen with a driver and all the parts and pieces. I'm not apposed to spending some of my own hard earned cash to make my dream a reality but in the end I'll only be keeping about 10-15 of these barrels and I just can't afford this with kiddo's relying on my for support.

I'm going to have to increase the cost of the barrels a small bit to offset this price increase. I initially wasn't going to include a driver as part of the barrel but there has been such a interest in having a driver included that I'm going to anyway. So since the barrels include everything you need to make a laser but the diode and batteries the price must go up a bit. IF you wanna back out I will understand. Or you can choose the option of not getting a driver for this.

With the driver included (and this will work for both bluray and the red) the price per barrel will be $35. Shipping will be extra but shouldn't be more than $4-$10 per barrel unless it's international. We'll work that part out when it comes time to pay.

Sorry to do this to you all but I just didn't see a way to make this work unless I did.

I think it is an excellent deal and I am staying in for one. Maybe next month I can get a couple more..I really am looking forward to these.. :)

Re: GB feeler laser barrels

Kenom I would expect the price to fluctuate. No problem! Thanks for the time estimate too. ;)

Question!!! Is 100 the minimum? Because I know some companies that will allow anything above the minimum amount. For example 117 units would be acceptable.

I am still in for one but if it comes in late like in the end of december or start jan it might have to ship overseas and I'm not sure if I would still take it.

Re: GB feeler laser barrels

Question re driver:
Would people be happy with it set up with 2 resistors, and just a solder jumper to join them?
I could add a set of pins and a jumper, but this is another space problem, and probably will not fit.
So, would people be able to cope with a little solder joint? Considering you're gonna also solder the diode too i would guess so but I wanted to check.

Re: GB feeler laser barrels

yeah i'm sure that they will allow me to make more. If the run is say 200 the rpice would even go down a small amount.

kenom - possibility I may be in for as many as 5 extra in a few weeks, but dont hold me to it, it depends on a lot of stuff :p
but im still in for one :)
and i wil get that new board design dones ASAP

Re: GB feeler laser barrels

The price increase is fine, i'm just worried about the international shipping at this point. Speed is not the biggest priority, as long as you can get these out fairly cheaply then it does not matter if they take a couple of weeks to get here.

Re: GB feeler laser barrels

I'm in for 1.. May I make a suggestion? Maybe you could make it so that in order to fit the diode you rest it in the case and screw the case together, pressing the diode in? Maybe by putting a small ridge on the inside of the case or a washer or something to hold the diode in place as you screw it shut, pressing it into its holder..

Regardless, I'm in for one, especially if it has a driver circuit included. It makes good sense, spending $40 for that instead of $25 for a dorcy mini, $10 for a driver, $5 for a module, etc etc and still getting a cheap looking homemade laser.. :) THANKS!

What your talking about is similair to a newwish or leadlight design as far as screwing the diode into place. I considered doing just that and would have gone with that particular idea, however I'm looking for the most effective thermal transfering method. by press fitting the diode into place you have no need for thermal grease as it makes better connection with the metal.

Added you to the list.

Re: GB feeler laser barrels

Kenom, I would STRONGLY recommend having a tiny blob of thermal compound around the diode anyway, and then press fit it in. This way all the microscopic pits will be filled in, and the efficiency will increase! That's what they do a processor / heatsink setup. The copper heatsink and the CPU look as smooth as hell, but under a microscope they have huge pits in the metal, hence the thermal paste to fill the gaps!

When I was looking into designs before, I spoke to a guy who could sell me 100 sachets of CPU grade thermal compound for £12 + delivery, so that's $0.25 per item

I can pass on his details to you if you want.

Re: GB feeler laser barrels

I think he meant having a section which when screwed together to the front section would press fit the diode into the housing. Beats having to reverse an aixiz housing and doing the same thing with a screw clamp.

Great idea if these housings came with heatsink compound as well if they are only $0.25 a piece.

Re: GB feeler laser barrels

boy that's a great deal. I donno how I'm gonna pay for it tho. To be honest this is completing a lot faster than I thought and I don't have my own funds to match this. I figured I'd have a little longer to save up a little money. I guess I'll have to sell some lasers on ebay to make some cash!!! last month I made $800 from laser sales. We are only 1 away from having the 60 needed to start this baby. and I had someone working on a prototype for me!

As far as the press fit thing with threads. The one downside I can see is trying to screw the thing together may end up buggering up the metal while trying to get a grip on it to turn it. That's a fair amount of pressure needed. I recommend using a small nut driver to press fit these in a vice. The metal on the driver is harder and won't bend or flex when clamping it with a vise.

Re: GB feeler laser barrels

What's the total count at now anyway? And when/how do we give you the $ to get the ball rolling?
