They hold lots of electricity that you can make sparks with/melt things

Re: GB: Australia Ultra-Capacitor

LaZeRz, you can charge them with any AC to DC power source. Find an old phone charger or purchase one with 2.5V output. The charge rate (current) will determine the speed at which the caps charge at.

In the video above they give a formula you can use to find the charge rate. Alternatively you could buy a cheap bench power supply or mod an old computer PSU.... up to your imagination and budget.

@ Fiddy, no probs mate... thanks!

Re: GB: Australia Ultra-Capacitor

Hmm, out of a box of around 20 phone chargers I can't find any 2.5volt ones...

I am in the progress of making an adjustable voltage PSU out of a computer power supply though, I guess I could use that.

I just need to know something... Does the power supply have to be current regulated?

If I can run these with my old computer PSU then I will be in for 4 since around 10 volts is the max I can go due to the IC voltage dropout.

Re: GB: Australia Ultra-Capacitor

the voltage you set will limit the current.

im just gunna use a variable power supply to charge mine.

Hmmm...

Well, the IC I will be using can go up to 5 amps.

I'l take your word for it ;)

Re: GB: Australia Ultra-Capacitor

you need some kind of power supply like and old computer power supply with a 3 volt out or a regular bench power supply that is variable.

You can charge them in parallel if you have a low voltage supply and then discharge them in series or in parallel for that matter.
And you can charge them in series if you have a higher voltage supply like a 5 volt supply.

And yes they could make a cool little spot welder with a couple of heavy copper electrodes.

be sure to heatsink your IC to get the full 5 amps out of it. and no the supply you use dose not have to be current regulated the more current you can give these caps the faster they will charge, if you have a 200 amp 2.5 volt power supply use it !

I might just have to get a couple of these :eg:

Re: GB: Australia Ultra-Capacitor

Jeff, your a pyrotechnician... Instead of saying I MIGHT have to get some of these, you should be saying "Im going to pick up a few thousand of these"

LOL, imagine a few thousand of these hooked up in parallel.... You would be able to move cars by just shocking them with the caps!

If nothing else you could set them on fire really fast, I like that :eg:

I'll grab one for now. Looking at getting a power supply soon so will be fun to play around with something =D
