I think he was saying the distances could be parabolic or something in nature. Although that would be easy to test. Besides, your answer being as close as it is means you're probably right. If it was parabolic and you calculated as linear I think you would be a number of nm's from the 609 wavelength guestimation.

Dr. Sams calculations that got him 609.05nm, also got 604.5797147 for the 604.6nm line, so his calculations are pretty damn close.
